Ever since November 2011, I completely stopped watching anything related to college football other than live Penn State games, highlights, and the Army-Navy game. I had almost completely given up watching The Four Letter long before November 2011, because they had gone all in and become sEcSPN but I’d still occasionally watch a show or two just to follow what other teams were doing and how it related to PSU’s bowl positioning. Since November 2011, I completely stopped watching them except for a live Penn State game or baseball game.

Also, I gave up completely watching BTN when they did their “tribute” show on the life of JoePa soon after he passed, again, except for the occasional live Penn State sporting event.

So where should I go for my “news and analysis” to get back into the swing of things, other than this board of course. Maybe the better question is “should I” get back into college football?

Can't help you much. My attitude is similar to your own. Just can't get so much into it these days. Funny thing is, I don't really miss it either.

Find other hobbies. I watch the teams I like and that's it. I wish there was a "Penn State and Pittsburgh Pro Sports" network available a la carte...

Yes, you should get back into college football. Despite all the off the field issues, despite the (still) draconian approach of the NCAA towards the very individuals that make them mountains of money, in general terms there is nothing better than college football for excitement and passion and energy.

Attend a live college football game - any level - and if you can't find one, then you can probably attend a Pitt game. See the students, the alums, the mascots, the cheerleaders, the half time shows. Take a look at the young men who, more often than not, play the game for the love of it, or for the opportunity to better themselves through an opportunity for a free education (yes, I know not everyone takes advantage of it).

I watched the Montana - North Dakota State game last week, and that was all it took for me - hell of a game in front of a sold out stadium, with a last second win for the home team - who defeated 4 time in a row champion. There may be one or two kids who have a shot at the next level, but most of them won't ever sniff the NFL except as a paying spectator. But, they will always have that game to remember, and for the Montana kids - a last second victory to savor for a long time.

Come back to college football and be a fan. We have a seat reserved just for you.

Psuro, I could almost hear the deep voice of James Earl Jones reading what you wrote. Nicely stated.

I no longer watch any games but ours and I am happier in the fall than I have ever been. At one time I watched every game I possibly could and on Saturdays I did little else. Now I spend that time with my wife, with my grandkids, reading, walking....and I only wish I had started years ago. Of course, I don't condemn those who still enjoy the games. For many it's a diversion from the pressures of everyday life. I would just urge you to do what's best for yourself. If you've been away and you desperately miss it, go back. I don't, and I won't.

Fully agree. A great game consistent with the spirit of amateur intercollegiate athletics. I find myself watching more FCS games, because it seems more like college football to me. Not a lot of hype, no Transformer robots, no elite BCS cram down by the announcers.

I love all of college football, every game it doesn't matter what it is. With so many teams and story lines happening if is hard to look away and not be interested/excited

Adults, especially over the age of 40 that "passionately" follow college football (i.e., 18-23 y/o kids) need to get a life. Follow NFL, instead.

If you want to follow Penn State, make sure Coach Franklin graduates MORE players than JoePa. That should be his legacy. And, if you want to PASSIONATELY follow Penn State, then help start a revolution. Because, shit ain't gonna change otherwise.

Ain't got nothing better to do, then catch a few games. Enjoy them for what they are....a football game among kids.

I'm basically like you. I'm not sure "news and analyst" exists any longer. To me the studio shows are essentially opinionated clown shows. There is so much available online with things like box scores, game summaries, which is where I migrated to. Cheering against B1G teams can also be fun for me, here is hoping Utah lays into Michigan.

I also find that turning down the volume during games and finding 20 minutes of chores to do at halftime make the games more tolerable.

TV use to have decent, thoughtful pregame shows but that ended when ESPN and Beano sucked the air out of the room.

I'm in the same boat. I will watch ESPN only for a major sporting event or one in which Penn State plays. Ditto BTN...unless PSU is playing I'm not interested.

I used to be a college football junkie. I only watched Penn State games last year. Didn't even watch the end of year playoff.

You're on to something there.

DITTO...DITTO....DITTO...DITTO...W.T.F. Felli

How I typically watch these days:

1. Avoid all pre-game/hype/BS shows (especially Game Day, unless they're in Happy Valley). Honestly, cutting the grass before a noon kick off is a better use of time (or, if PSU is playing early, spending time on here talking about the game is a lot of fun).

2. I still have a decent amount of interest in non-PSU games, but don't feel like I have to watch them (and usually don't).

3. The best football to watch, IMO, is all the Pac 12 late night games on Saturday. Awesome to get in bed with a drink and just sort of watch until I fall asleep. Weather is awesome, girls are hot, and I typically have zero rooting interest for anyone. Makes for easy enjoyment.

An oddly enough the hottest in my opinion are the Oregon cheerleaders.

Don't want to have to throw a flag 30 yards on this so....

I've found that the best way to watch is to save it on the VCR, keep clear of all that is said about the contest. Then about 6:30 pm or so, turn it on, fast forward through all the junk and watch the contest in an hour and a half.

When it's done, I can turn the channel and watch that week's anointed SEC contest between the two most hyped teams for the week ... after all, the conference has 13 of the top 25 teams in the country and they can't all be playing Lamar or Florida A. M. N. and T. Sometimes they will have a Big12 matchup between their conferences 6 teams that are in the top 25 - those games are great for offense.

On some weekends, we are treated to the Domers when they have a classic matchup - I just love when they play at Southern Cal. Sometimes I can't contain the laughter when they show Kelly on the sideline - that Irish face gets so red when he's pi$$ed.

Then around halftime of that contest (pushing 10:15 or so) I go to bed knowing that when the alarm goes off on Sunday morning so I can get to Mass at 7:30, I can see the scores of those SEC/Big12/Notre Dame dogfights on the bottom ticker on the ABC Morning News.

This sure beats the way things used to be - now my biggest problem is getting my daughter to remember to set the VCR for an extra 30 - 60 minutes because the damned games are never over in 3 and a half hours because of all the commercials, replay reviews and going back to the mothership for an update from the Carrier Dome.

Rant over ... I'm going home - or back to youtube to watch/listen to Papa was a Rolling Stone one last time.
