Hudson HS is one of the top public schools in the state and has been for years. Yesterday, the mayor attended a school board meeting, said he has consulted a judge and stated that everyone on the school board had to resign or would be charged for child pornography. At issue is a school book being used named "642 Things to Write About". Some of the suggestions that the school, through the book, is suggesting kids write about?:

  • Write a scene that begins: ‘It was the first time I killed a man.’
  • Describe your favorite part of a man’s body using only verbs.
  • You are a serial killer. What TV shows are on your DVR list? Why?
  • The kill fee.
  • Write a sex scene you wouldn’t show your mom.
  • Describe a time when you wanted to orgasm but couldn’t.
  • Drink a beer. Write about the taste.
  • Write an X-rated Disney scenario.
  • A roomful of people who want to sleep together.
  • The first time you had sex
The principal claims he had no idea. They don't name the teacher(s). Who is legally responsible for this kind of content?

The appropriateness of the material aside, who is the mayor to threaten anyone with criminal charges? Resign or be charged? What the hell is that? I'd tell the mayor (and more importantly the DA) if charges are appropriate then go ahead and do what you have to do.

Yes and no. The appropriateness was the reason for my post. And I think the mayor was grandstanding, to be clear. But being charged with a felony child porn crime is no joke. Even if cleared, that charge gets on your record. And in today's world you are an instant away from a false domestic violence case or civil suit for some kind of inappropriate behavior at work. When you are charged with a felony, especially with that kind of charge, it is a MAJOR problem.

For example, JS was never charged nor would he have ever been convicted of anything in the shower incident that JVP got entangled in. But that event, combined with others, resulted in him being put away for life. no single incident would have probably even been charged without others for collaboration.

Did anyone resign?
Even worse, did they make anyone drink an IC Light and describe the taste? That paragraph of words would make even Andrew Dice Clay blush

Understand the killing and sex, but drinking a beer? Shut it all down!!!

The mayor is over reaching , however the material is very inappropriate for a public High School. The person/persons to hold accountable are the AP teacher, Department Chair and Building Administrator who supervised the English Department. In most cases, School Board members rubber stamp Administration recommendations when it comes to curriculum. Although as political agendas become more and more infused in curricula materials, School boards need to be more and more on their toes regarding such materials.

While not appropriate for a high school curriculum, they seem like interesting subject lines for this board

Just had my wife's friend read to my wife the books her 7th grader has to read this year. 33% of the books were LGBTQ themed books. Then there were several more books like "Mommy works, daddy is at home" type of stuff. It is very pervasive out there now.

What grade?

Jrs and Seniors.

Nothing you wouldn’t see in a writer’s workshop or college writing class; but inappropriate for HS (even though most of these kids have seen/read about everything in that book). The grandstanding is pathetic. Teachers should have taken appropriate excerpts from the book and used those - done and done. Recall that clown mayor.

As a retired teacher, let me throw my 2 cents in. I would assume the book was board approved. Even if it was, child porn charges against board members would not stick. The principal would probably not know. The teacher certainly knows the content of the book. I would never use anything like this in a classroom, although I did not teach writing. It is on the teacher who should face termination. Hudson is an excellent school district. I live near it. It would be a coveted place to teach for any teacher.

And people wonder why teen suicide is higher than ever.
speaking of that, "13 reasons why" is one of the biggest causes of young teen suicides. It was billed as a big deterrent (what can people do to prevent a teen from killing themselves). But if you watch it, a teen will think "yeah, wait till I'm gone. Then they'll miss me. I'll show them!" Of course, the notion of this was suppressed by the media in their support of the entertainment industry. I guess that is just my local anecdotal experience but I have spoken with lots of local counselors who say the same thing.

This is mayoral grandstanding a la "you got trouble in River City." Nobody's saying this is curriculum or that these writing ideas were assigned. This is just a book at the school -- maybe in the school library or maybe not even that. And there are 600-some writing prompts and these are just the raciest ones. Of course they're inappropriate and maybe that book needs to be removed from school. But that could be done without calling for the school board to resign.

Show me a teacher who actually assigned some of these prompts (or accepted students' papers consisting of basically pornography) and then you have a problem. But I bet neither of those things happened.

If so, you have to question the teachers judgment as well as their intent. What were they anticipating in terms of reading material and how would they interact with the students after reading the results of such writing prompts.

I agree with you about the grandstanding. But at least according to the article, the book was distributed to the students in the class. It wasn't a single copy buried on a shelf in the school library.

All of this 'woke' (read, loser) content aside, the only thing in this that I found truly egregious was, if true, that students were instructed to not take the book home or discuss it with their parents. That said, I work with teens all day long; they aren't always honest. I know, big shocker.

Anyway, really bad judgement, if true. Perhaps a young teacher thinking these kids are her/his friends. I see it every day.

True liberalism at work. Don't teach math, reading, cursive writing, or how to balance your check book. That might have something to do with education.

In Ohio, they refer “642 Things to Write About" as the unofficial biography of Urban Meyer.

You sure love to make things up.
I wonder where all of the top high schools and college are.....hmmmmm

BTW, if this is a writing class, an AP class, and they are using a college textbook, as a parent, I am not sure I would care. If is meant to try to get someone to step into another persons shoes and write as them, isn't that what writings is all about?

Isn't this cancel culture from the other side?

What I don’t understand is why resigning from a school board absolves you from child pornography charges. Sounds like complete BS leveraging, no?

If child pornography was even remotely involved, resign or be charged would never be an option. Quite frankly, the mayor should resign or be removed for trying to use that ploy.
