So where do yinzers see the match Friday?

Lots of discussion about the Iowa v huskers match and we seemingly now know what the lineup looks like, so do we come home with a W heading into Iowa week?

Appreciate the generosity @149 and 174 -- I would think Purinton is the favorite on paper, and Labriola is tough (prob no bonus there). 165, 184 and 197 should be tight and could make things pretty interesting.

Based on odds of everything going right vs. everything going wrong, I'll say PSU 18, NEB 12.

I think this will be a great January test for the team.

A road big 10* dual on tv with a very good but wounded team looking to give a giant fist to the back.

125, 149 and 157 are the highest probability loses to me.

141 will be f**

165 will be boring until OT

184 has an eye towards the post season

197 would be huge for seeding

174 I think is close but really never in doubt. Would love for a late 3rd pd major attempt.

133 would love to see how we dont get ridden

Hwt another big pinfall maybe?

125- neb dec. 0-3
133- PSU dec. 3-3
141- PSU dec. 6-3 could be md lots of illegal fist to the back calls late
149- Neb dec 6-6 long body hard to finish shots against
157- Neb dec 6-9 Stay out of tight upper body ties
165 PSU dec 9-9
174 PSU MD 13-9 Love Lab but Hall is Hall
184 PSU dec. 16-9 too quick and skilled on feet for Venz
197 PSU dec. 19-9 first cradle in awhile?
285 PSU dec. 22-9 I like what Snacks has shown so far.

There are some really interesting matchups. Red always seems to wrestle Nick well. If Nick has really jumped a level this year, do we see a bit more separation this year? I'll say Nick by 3-4.
White is tough to score on and Cenzo has had some very close matches with him. Also, has White improved his offense? Perhaps. Cenzo by 2.
Brooks vs Venz. Venz will have a chip on his shoulder coming off the loss to Assad. Good test for AB. I think he'll pass it Brooks by 3.
Snacks vs #15 Lance. Another chance to make a statement. Snacks ekes it out with a strong ride. By 1.
Neb wins 25, 49 and 57. PSU wins the others but no bonus.
PSU 21-9.

WE ARE!!!

If I’m reading their site correctly, you can get GA ticket for Friday night for $1.

Honestly, every match should be super exciting, that's why I am really excited about this dual.

I don't think any wrestler on paper would be a bonus favorite over their counterpart.

Our hammers Nick/Cenzo/Mark will have their hands full with their Nebraska counterparts. Thomsen and Meredith is going to be very scrappy. I see Lovett wrestling RBY very tough. Purinton and Verk will certainly be interesting and Pipher hangs tough in every match. Then AB/Venz, Schultz/Shak, Lance/Snacks all should be tight.

Who's to say? It could also be Luke Gardner and I'm not sure I've seen anybody confirm that Joe Lee is NOT certified at 157. I'd really like to see Berge get healthy, but I think Joe Lee can certainly wrestle at an All American level if he's certified to do so and given the chance (assuming that 157 isn't too big of a cut for him. I'm just not familiar enough with his situation to say whether it's a crazy thought or not).

So if berge ends up out for the season does psu take pipher to the b1g tournament?

Obviously I'm not Cael but I can't see pulling Joe Lee's redshirt in the plans this year regardless. It would be a tough situation if he does go 157, all his matches are at 165 right now. We'd have a Joe Smith situation where he'd be seeded last at B1Gs.

I'm obviously not some scout but I think Joe needs the redshirt this year. Watching him at the scuffle, man his ceiling is high. When he's on, he is dangerous (pinned Connor Flynn and nearly majored Wentzel from Pitt, both NQ caliber wrestlers) but I don't think he registered an escape against either Bullard or Wittlake.

So you would say then, that it's Pipher? I suppose it would not be the first time a 149 pounder went at 157 for a whole season plus a post season?

I’d say 99% chance it’s Pipher if Berge is out. If it wasn’t I think we’d see some movement at opens for Lee or Gardner.

How do people see Brooks-Venz going down? Is Brooks too good on his feet for Venz? Will Venz be extra hyped after a loss? What do ya think?

Venz is a killer with mat awareness and feel. Kinda Bo lite. Brooks is that too (to what degree tbd), and is more athletic/quick. Venz’s experience/savvy and the fire from a big home crowd and a recent loss may or may not make a difference.

149 Verk dec Purinton 15-0
157 Robb MD Pipher 15-4

There you go. 31-7.

What chance does Pipher have to qualify for Nationals? How many do they take?
Those are 2 really difficult questions, that will be easier in 3-4 weeks.

The easiest part is: unless he wins some matches against quality opponents, he is unlikely to receive an at large bid. He would have to claim a conference spot at B10s.

B10 could get anywhere from 6 to 10 qualifiers, depending on results from remaining matches. Probably will be 6 or 7, maybe 8, but anybody's guess today.

It's also not so clear which scenario is better for Bo. If B10 gets 8+ auto-qualiifiers, then they will seed all 14 wrestlers. The exact draw would matter a lot. Lose in the quarters and he'd have to win the first consi to reach the 7th/8th match.

Having more qualifiers might not be much help -- if he didn't make 8th, them he'd have to wrestle more matches while undersized.

Having fewer qualifiers could conceivably help him, if the random draw gives him an easier quarters matchup. (Reaching the semis would clinch a bid). But that's a roll of the dice.

125 Thomsen DEC Meredith 0-3
133 RBY DEC Lovett 3-3
141 Lee MD Red 7-3
149 Purinton DEC Verk 7-6

My thoughts on this are he needs to win some matches before anyone could think he will win a berth at Big Ten's. He isn't getting an at large bid.
My other thought is if the above doesn't happen (win some matches) it doesn't matter anyway.

He would have to qualify as a top 33, I believe, and I don’t see that. Maybe too harsh. Maybe.
This is not correct. Every team gets to enter 1 wrestler per weight at B10s. Top 33 is not a factor. Otherwise Schnupp would not have competed at B10s last year.

Cael will enter the guy he thinks will score the most points at nationals.

We're gonna learn a lot about young Aaron in the next 8 days. A seasoned Venz tomorrow on the road and another quality opponent in a hostile CHA next week. Damn, we're lucky to be able to watch this sh!t go down!

Every team gets to enter all 10 weights at conferences, the only qualification for conferences is your coach enters you. There, you either qualify by placing within the conference allocated spots or you have to get an "At Large Bid" after (like Stoll did last year)

Truthfully, getting to NCAAs is quite a feat in itself. It's been stated here many times but we're spoiled at PSU fans and here's some perspective, to qualify for the tournament then go 0-2 is an accomplishment in itself. You were one of the Top 33 wrestlers in Division 1 at your class (and making Division 1 is a feat in itself)

Pipher has improved dramatically during his time here but I'm iffy if he'd qualify for NCAAs but would love to be proven wrong. He can hang with basically any 157 pounder as a 149 pounder (if Deakin didn't bonus him, though he was close, then I don't think any 157 pounder would)

He made the Scuffle Finals last year, he pinned Markus Hartman who is an AA contender at 157 this year. He's hell of a wrestler and whatever he ultimately provides in the postseason (assuming Berge is out) wouldn't change that at all.

We've hit the fun part of the schedule ... In the next three weeks, Nick Lee gets the numbers 1, 3, 4, 5, and 6 ranked wrestlers. That is, the top 5 wrestlers not named Nick Lee.

Wow, didn't realize that! In what other sport would your team or an individual compete against #'s 1,3,4,5 and 6 in a 3 week span, in the middle of the season? Worlds oldest and greatest.
