He was foolish to declare for the NFL. He's not a speed rusher, nor does he overpower OTs. He's a smart player who was not even 1st team All-B1G.

I see Prye as moving DT Curtis Cothran to DE with Tyrell Chavis and Parker Cothren at DT. Look for Shareef Miller to start at the other DE pressed by a rising Ryan Buchholz, Torrance Brown, Shane Simmons and Daniel Joseph, while depth at DT comes from Robert Windsor, Kevin Givens, Antoine White, Ellison Jordan and Antonio Shelton. I still think that Shaka Toney will play at OLB, a position of need.

With Godwin and Sickles declaring for the NFL, PSU has room for 2 graduate transfers. Any thoughts on this?

Sickles would have been a 5th year senior and a 3 year starter. Sorry, but you just don't lose guys that that and not miss them. I'm hopeful that they can replace him in the form of increased performance by several players. I don't know if we beat OSU without him. He was a beast in that second half.

I think there will be a dropoff from Sickels to the "next best" to take his place there but have to give credit to Spencer for how he handled the DL rotation.

As a whole unit there's more upside to '17s DL. Buchholz is ready for a bigger role. Miller and Brown played well and will only get better. Throw Shane Simmons into the mix along with other talented rs freshmen Joseph and Toney....I think the DE is a position we could afford to lose a guy early.

I think Miller will out-perform him next year. He is a good pass rusher and stopped overpursuing as the year wore on.
That said, this past season does not happen without Sickles second half against OSU.

"21 Guns of Dixie"

You know when they have those DNA experts in criminal trials.........
when they say "The analysis shows that the DNA matches the accused"........
And there is only a "One in 5,000,000,000 chance that the DNA belongs to anyone else"

Crimson Lights and 21 Guns ARE that one in 5 Billion "nuts-on" match

And no Gunsie, er...uh, I mean Crimson......Penn State is not going to recruit Robert Foster
Your Brother, the Orifice of Delphi, has already determined that the scholarship is going towards a "JUCO Linebacker" o_O

Exactly. And with the depth at DE I look for Toney to move to OLB. Cabinda, Bowen, with Koa at STAR is a good starting group, but outside of Brendan Smith there is not much proven depth.

You win "biggest jackass in the universe" by acclaim. along with moron of the millennium. Your ex-girlfriends/boyfriends found that out. And you don't have to work at it; it comes naturally to you as a congenital a^^hole.

We need to save a spot for Paris Ford in case he doesn't want to go to Miami.

I loved watching Garrett Sickels play for Penn State, and wish he was not going pro early. But I wish him all success in the NFL. (Wonder if he will end up as a rush backer.)

I also believe that PSU happens to be blessed with a lot of good players in the front seven, and that Coach Pry will find a suitable successor to step into Sickels' position.

Sickels was a fine player for us. Proud of him and wish him the best. He will be tried at OLB in NFL, perfect position for him in the next level.

Outside linebacker???

I apprecrate what Garret did for the team and best of luck chasing his dream.
The remaining players at all the defensive line positions have the time and
opportunity to get bigger, stronger and more experienced for next year.
Whether there is a drop-off, far too early too tell. Guys stepped up this year
and I expect the same next season. With all the extra help inside, does
anyone think Givens goes back outside?

0% chance Cothran moves back to DE. Only a fool would move the most productive 3 tech back to a position he outgrew and Pry is no fool.

I agree on Miller. He had some flashes of greatness but needs to put on 15 or 20 lbs and get stronger. IIRC, he's got three more years of eligibility but could opt out to the nfl in two.

Wrong, dead wrong! You don't replace a player like Sickles with underclassman. He was a wrecking ball against OSU. Very productive player and a great leader. As was discussed in a previous post, Sickles had good reasons to declare for the NFL draft. Wish him all the best.

I don't believe he is projected to be drafted very high. On the other hand, I'm not sure
another year would have improved it that much.

Yeah I don't expect another year to help him much if at all.
Time to move on with his life, either in the NFL or otherwise. He graduated.

Who knows what his personal life situation is, so I don't think he was foolish. I do think he should have stayed one more year though. That being said, we will miss him at the beginning of the year, but may not miss him so much as the year goes on with the younger players gaining experience.

He's not really ranked "anywhere" - just a bunch of yakmaluks throwing darts in a dark room - - - who aren't even sure where the dart board is
There are probably 100 different Gurus making their lists - - - - and none of them mean squadoosh until AT LEAST after the combine and pro days and what not.
At this point the "Gurus" are purely guessing at stuff as basic (and as impactful) as 40 times and what not.

That said, if Sickels does slot in around the #7 spot for DEs....that probably translates to a 2nd Round pick (the NFL LOVES to draft DEs)...and a nice chunk of $$$$.
At the same time, just looking at one site I bookmark for this stuff.....they have Sickels at #16 among draft eligible DEs (which translates into a late round (5? 6?) pick.
When one "expert" has him as a 2nd rounder....and another "expert" has him as a 6th rounder....how much "expertise" is involved here? :)
Hell, as of a couple months ago. "OurLads" had him at #33 among defensive ends - which is basically "hope to sign on somewhere as a FA" territory - though that "ranking" seems ridiculously low. and they may have adjusted that in the last several weeks.

None of them are any better than the other at this point (especially once you get past the top 20-30 guys in the entire draft).

Wish him well and hope for the best.......but at this point even Garrett doesn't have much of an idea where he might be selected

Sickels was 2nd team all B1G. Schwan was 3rd team. It's silly to say that PSU won't miss those guys. The only question is how fast will the replacements get up to speed.

Cothran did well at DT so why move him to DE? Besides, he's awfully big for a DE.

I could definitely see Toney moving to LB. I'm sure he's grown since the roster was published but he's only listed at 195lbs. The staff has to do something because I'd hate to count on freshmen to play the position the next few years. I'm curious how J. Thomas has done this year.

Godwin & Sickels didn't create room for 2 graduate transfers. If Smith & Davis remain on scholarship we are currently at 88.

They've got their reasons. Sometimes their family really needs money (even if it's NFL minimum type money). Sometimes they're just done with college and don't want to spend another fall taking classes. Just ready to get on with it.

I thought Sickels would benefit from another year because he needs to be a little stronger and have a little better stats for the NFL to take him seriously. But maybe he's looking at his charts and thinking he's already pretty close to his physical peak and another year won't help.

Whatever the reason, he will join the pool of free agents at the periphery of the NFL and sometimes it turns into a career.

PSU will miss him. Anytime you lose someone with experience it hurts. But they clearly have some really good young players at DE so they'll probably be OK. Bucholtz, Miller, Brown.... plus Simmons and Joseph will be 2nd year players ready for 1st action.

"Works hard?" Nah, just comes naturally to Schwenksville Jhonnie.

Now, if you wanna see him work hard, just check him out trolling the single-mom websites. Not even Saban shows that kind of obsessiveness.

Crimson Lights, post: He was foolish to declare for the NFL. WRONG - HE' LIVING HIS OWN LIFE!! He's not a speed rusher, nor does he overpower OTs. TELL THAT TO OH-HIGH-YA STATE.... He's a smart player who was not even 1st team All-B1G.

I see Prye as moving DT Curtis Cothran to DE WRONG with Tyrell Chavis and Parker Cothren at DT.WRONG - BOTH ARE 1 TECH THAT DON'T USUALLY PLAY TOGETHER Look for Shareef Miller to start at the other DE pressed by a rising Ryan Buchholz, Torrance Brown WRONG - BROWN WILL START , Shane Simmons and Daniel Joseph, while depth at DT comes from Robert Windsor, Kevin Givens, Antoine White, Ellison Jordan and Antonio Shelton. I still think that Shaka Toney will play at OLB, a position of need.

With Godwin and Sickles declaring for the NFL, PSU has room for 2 graduate transfers WRONG - CJF WILL LIKELY NOT TAKE ANY GRAD TRANSFERS - STUPID TO TURN AWAY 4-STAR RECRUITS TO TAKE GRAD TRANSFERS WITH THE CURRENT ROSTER. Any thoughts on this? YES, COULD HAVE JUST STOPPED AT "I Don't Think"

Every spring under Franklin we see a few position changes, so it will be interesting to see if Toney is indeed at DE, or is at OLB. Simmons will be special at DE, very soon, so he's there and locked in. We do get Vranec back from injury, I believe, for camp. Jan Johnson has ended his football career, and then you have the incoming true frosh. I think the concern is more at LB than at DE...I think the TALENT is there at DE, but it isn't quite as seasoned as previous years in the Franklin era. We will miss Garrett, but we also know that his understudies have god given talent, and have benefitted from his brotherhood and tutelage.

Anthony Averett was foolish to sign with Bama. He'll soon realize, as well as the rest of the Bama team, that the USS Saban is taking on water. I see Averett being a grad transfer to PSU as a walk-on.
