I think PSU might have given teams the template for beating Iowa's defense

maybe nobody's got the horses to do it at QB and receiver, but if you watched a certain video blog - purposefully not linking it here - this week it's clear that Yurcich's concepts and play calls even with Roberson in the game would still have worked in the second half with merely competent D1 QB play, despite Iowa fan's assertion that Phil Parker would have tightened things down even had Clifford stayed in the game. I don't want to beat up on Roberson - the coaches should take some blame for his readiness or lack thereof. But there were several opportunities missed where we had the right play called and the execution by everyone but the QB was what it should have been for big gains.

There’s a clear book on how to beat Iowa‘s D and it’s been out there for years - it’s just not an easy thing to execute consistently when you have long fields and flaws of your own. This is not an infallible defense, they just make the bet that you’ll make mistakes often enough that they’ll win.

Wow…12 minutes to respond….at 12:13 AM (assuming central time zone)….on another team’s board. This is getting pathetic.

I don't think it's necessarily wrong to beat up the QB a little. I'm not saying down the kid incessantly, but the film breakdown shows that he missed Dotson on 4 throws that he was either wide open (2 passes 7-12 yards depth and to the left) and both deep shots that he threw to the left instead of leading him left to right.

On multiple other passes he seemed to throw to the most covered guy leaving at least 1-2 WRs open. The only adjustment Iowa made to our offense was to stop playing Cover 2 and started rushing men since they saw TR couldn't read the defense very well.

I think this is fixable. He just came into the worst case scenario of a defense to face on the road. The one thing I hold the coaches accountable for is not calling a time out after the second false start and making an adjustment to keep that from happening. 8 in total, which is roughly 40 yards of field position lost that could have been limited to 10.

There is no reasonable explanation for not calling a time out...but they didn't address it while the offense went back to the sidelines... which is even more inexplicable.

Seems to me that, on average, about four teams a year execute it successfully. PSU was executing it to perfection before QB1 got hurt.

What’s the appropriate waiting time? I’m here when I’m here and reply when I feel moved to. This is a great board and I’m here often throughout the year because very few other fan boards give so much quality to non-members. I’m also Eastern time, but I’m a night owl. I’m a Hawkeye, but live more than 700 miles from Kinnick.

Agreed, and if Clifford had stayed in and continued to execute, PSU would have likely won.
