If PSU is on track to possibly be in the Playoff games, why not burn Menet and Fries RS NOW?

One of he only things holding us back from a National Championship bid is a an injury ridden OL. Yes, we need OSU to beat Michigan and we need to win out and beat Wisky in the B1G championship game to be strongly considered for 1 of the 4 top spots by seasons end. How many times will ANY team (except for Alabama) be in this position? Not many! OK, then if the only thing WE (Penn State) can control is our own destiny, why not play our BEST players NOW, rather than waiting to maiximize a few players college career time for the sake of the teams future? As the head coach, CJF's job is to put Penn State in the best position to win National Championships, and in an honorable way. Well, burning Fries and Menet's RS status for the overall sake of the team seems like an honorable move. The future is right now, so make your best moves to try to capitalize on it NOW! I know OLmen need experience to gel, so play them now against Rutgers and MSU to gain that experience! Without them, we don't put ourselves in the best possible position to win out , IMHO!

Jeezus!!!!!!......why hasn't anyone else considered this?

This whole discussion seems so unproductive.

1) Rutgers, Rutgers, Rutgers, Rutgers. 2) We know nothing about any playoff until after the next two games. 3) Limegrover knows all and will make the best decisions. 4) Penn State will have offensive linemen the next two games. Who they are depends largely on who can stay healthy. 5) Rutgers, Rutgers ....

By the way, does anyone know who Penn State plays on Saturday?

Did you ever consider that maybe they don't want to burn their RS?

PSU Football doesn't revolve around your ego.

Because having Menet and Fries isn't going to allow us to beat Alabama this year, but they may 4 years down the road... Although MSU isn't a lock and, who knows what will happen between tOSU and Michigan we still have a good chance to win out the regular season and make it to the Big Ten Championship game without Menet and Fries. If they were good enough that we would be capable of beating the teams with stellar D linemen, then I expect they would already be starting. They are a future upgrade for sure, and this isn't to slight them or their ability/potential. Playing them just won't do enough to improve our chances in the playoffs.

Agree. Agree. Agree. Agree. Agree. Agree. Agree.
Uncomfortable silence.

Don't pile on, he's under quota for questions regarding which offensive lineman wore the highest socks on the road for PSU for all time.

Another thing no one has mentioned (as far as I know) is that maybe Fries and Menet are NOT among the best available lineman. Maybe the coaches think we're better off playing others ahead of them. Just a thought.

Who are they, the players, the coaches, or both? If it's the players, that's a shame, because they chose Penn State so they can help the team and their own chances to play on Sunday's.If it's the coaches, they probably wanted to hold them back for the future; but that was then and this is now. If the coaches want to hold them back because they aren't physically or mentally ready, or they aren't as ready to help as others already eligible on the roster, that's a different story. I (we) are assuming these kids though are our future, so the future is NOW if the coaches think they can help us win a MNC!

Everyone was clamoring for Ryan Bates to lose his redshirt last year and play. Didn't happen.

So after an additional full offseason, strength, conditioning, spring ball, preseason camp, etc....for the first 4 games of this season, ProFootballFocus had Bates' cumulative grade for the season at a -8, which one of the worst grades for a guard in the NCAA. He was terrible the beginning of the season.

Now, he has really come on since. But it would be highly unusual for Menet or Fries to step on the field and be anything other than terrible for the final part of this season. That is par for the course for a true freshman offensive linemen filling a job that requires grown man strength, reps, and intelligence.

So you will be getting terrible performance (most likely) at the cost of their 5th year when they will be kicking ass. For an entire season when this program should be flying.

If Franklin burns their shirt, it's because he has no other options. If he has other options, he should use them first.

Been thoroughly covered by myself and others. Your thought was a good one.

I really don't think our OL is the ONLY thing that stands between us and a national championship...we still have lack of depth at linebacker and a fairly young Defensive Line...also McSorely is a gamer but he didn't exactly light it up against Michigan...I'm not sure we'd match up well with any of the top 4-5 teams in the rankings (on a neutral field) this year...and these two true frosh certainly don't put us over the edge

Disagree - no guarantee we'll be in a position to get to the playoff at any point in the future. If the kids are comfortable with playing, and CJF has said they are, you have them ready to go if things go south. If/when there is another injury, one of them will have to play anyway. Getting to the playoff is a big deal IMO - huge for our players, fans, coaches, and most importantly, recruits. Even if you take one in the teeth, you can get a lot of traction out of being one of the four best teams in the country last year.

Why Menet? Fries you can argue as that moves Bates back to guard and his more natural position. So is Fries-Bates combo on the left side better than Bates-Gonzalez. For Menet, he cannot be any better than Gonzo/Dowery such that it would make any sense to burn his shirt.

I guess there is a difference between believing that you can win every game and trying to be pragmatic about your chances. We beat Rutgers without Fries/Menet. I think MSU will be a tougher game than their record would indicate, and maybe Fries/Menet would help here. I think we would have a very tough time against Wisky, however and even if we do win the next three we likely won't be playing in the playoffs. That would take a few one loss teams to lose another game. Sure, playing Fries/Menet would seem to give us better odds of winning out, but I don't think there is enough payback without a real shot at the playoff.

If they could make a difference in the conference championship game (assuming we get there), would you play them? I would. Now, if we don't go to the CCG and are 10-2 going into whatever bowl game we get, I wouldn't play them.

Sure, if it made a difference between winning and losing a conference championship, I think it may be worth doing. You have to be confident, however, that the talented and inexperienced guys you want to play early are clearly better than the less talented and slightly more experienced guys. I'll trust trust CJF and the coaching staff to make this decision.
