If you were a good businessman - would you offer the free stuff immediately?

I'm not sure there won't be a free board eventually.

But first, I'd try to hook people into paying, in hopes they would stick with it once the $1/year offer expired.

Obviously i don't know the deal or the plan, but the way they have rolled it out seems pretty stupid to me.

1. Clearly, continuity and eyeballs are important to them. If that's what you want, the best message is always "you'll hardly notice any change." The worst, of course, is silence.
2. I spend many of my working hours dealing with very sophisticated marketing types. Two of the things they don't do are (i) diminish the perceived value of their offering with near-free offering and (ii) run bait and switch-like pricing structures.
3. Long term, the $1 offer is mostly about getting your contact information. Read those T&C's carefully boys and girls.

From a business perspective, I don't see how a start-up company like On3 (with current coverage limited to 11 colleges https://www.on3.com/college/ ) can effectively compete against established competitors like Rivals.com (a Yahoo company) and 247.com (owned by CBS Sports. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/247Sports.com). Rivals.com isn't going to idly allow the migration of the Lions Den to On3 without replacing it with a comparable subscription forum and associated recruiting content. Perhaps this is an opportunity for Tom Mc to convert his board to a fee-board and get rich in the process. ;)🤷‍♂️

If you are currently a BWI contributor/contractor/employee, I'd keep my options open and my resume' updated.

It appears that Shannon Terry is simply trying to rinse and repeat what he did with Rivals and 247, however this time the playing field is already very crowded.

On3 is founded by Shannon B. Terry, who has 25+ years experience in sports and entertainment media. Terry previously founded 247Sports (acquired by CBS Sports), Pop Culture Media (acquired by CBS Interactive), and co-founded Rivals.com (acquired by Yahoo!).

Following is an interesting article, written 10 years ago by Clay Travis, regarding Shannon Terry.

“Why buy the cow when you can get the milk for free?”

I‘ve heard that one many times, but I don’t get it. 😞
