I'm thrilled with his turnaround at the plate but,

Hey; its through the sixth inning and no errors yet.......that outta count for sumting!
It does and Happ is doing well.

And why is Hurdle taking him out? Didn't throw that many pitches. And with 20 games in a row without a day off and the extra innings why not try to get another inning from him? Don't get it.

While Polanco has been bad plenty, go back and watch the replay. In the wide shot from down the first base line, you can see Scofield waiving Polanco home. So I would ask, is there a worse 3rd base coach in baseball than Scofield?
No. He is abysmal. He is the worst I have ever seen.

Nits.....agree 100 %. A lot of reasons to send Happ out there for the 7th. Can't think of a single good reason to take him out right there

That said....... VERY impressive work from Happ. As opposed to his last start - against a weak lineup with a slew of liners all over the yard (despite only giving up one run)......tonight's outing, against a very solid lineup, was impressive as hell

I did not see that, but that is of no surprise. And it is somewhat comforting to know that Polanco didn't make that decision. Sofield can and will be replaced at third next year. Gregory is in it for the long haul.

With a tired bull pen, I don't get it either. Perhaps there are some health concerns of him going a long distance.

I read it as, "let's not mess with his confidence, he had a great game, let's get him out before he screws it up." Wish they had that thought w/ Jeff Locke around the 5th inning more often.

What does Hurdle have to do to prove he is a very good manager. I feel confident that his reason for removing Happ when he did was for the best.

Polanco's definitely a lunkhead on the bases, no doubt, but the decision to move Scofield to third base coach this year is clearly one of Hurdle's oddest decisions. The man is absolutely terrible in that role. He is perhaps the worst third base I have ever seen. People complained about Leyva last year, but compared to Scofield he is HOF material.

Meant to share this last night. Couple friends had tickets to the game last night in the first row behind the visitor's dugout. So naturally, they harassed the Dbacks players all night, to their wives' chagrin. So late in the game, Saltamacchia (spelling?) tossed this ball to the one wife:

Well, he could win the World Series...............6 times. :) This year will be #1.

Wasn't knocking him Knocker. Just wanted to know the reasoning when he has a bullpen that is exhausted and several more games to go without a day off.

Marte and Polanco are terrific ball players. If either of them had any head for the game they could be even better.

When Tabata was here, you could put the three of them together and not break 100 combined baseball IQ.

Hurdle tried to squeeze an extra inning out of Liriano last night and look at where that got him. The bullpen is so deep right now that it is almost impossible to overwork it. Soria, who replaced Happ, was very well rested. In the 15 inning game the night before, Caminero and Blanton both threw three innings so the Pirates really did not use that many pitchers.

Lots of reasons he could have been taken out. Happ could have said his arm was tired, we don't know. As much as the BP needs rest the team needs Happ to take his turn in the rotation every 5 days.......

is there a worse base runner in all of baseball than Gregory Polanco?
If you pay closer attention to the play, this base running gaffe is on Sofield, not Polanco. As Polanco neared third, Sofield is clearly waving him around. Sofield has made many questionable (bad) decisions this year and this was just another one.

He reminds me of our former DB coach /defensive coordinator Butler. On one play he waved his hands and celebrated, jumping up and down, even before the player reaches third. On another, he lets a player slide into third when the play is not even close.

I think the team's issues with base running can be connected to their coaches' abilities in this area.

If this team had consistent fundamentals ala the Royals, they'd be several games up on the Cards.
