Anybody else watch his match with Berger tonight? Final was 13-6 I believe, but it was fairly close and Berger almost had another TD in the 3rd. My feed kept crapping out, but it appeared that Berger had him in trouble in the 2nd and almost over on his back, but it got called for potentially dangerous. I was going back and forth between matched so with that and the feed I might have been seeing things differently than what really happened with the potentially dangerous call. Just curious if anyone else watched it.

We had it going on the computer while btn was on the tv. I-Mart started in typical fashion but hit somewhat of a wall half way through the 2/nd period. He tires when pushed. He won't beat Nolf if he doesn't have at least a 3 point lead after first period imo. Nolf can do what few others can and that is constantly press him without getting tossed. Berger is a very solid wrestler and somebody who is better than his results imo. He lost to Jake ryan in a match where Ryan literally stalled his way to victory. I think Berger gets third at conference. The gas tank is a real problem for I-Mart. James Green is not a guy that tested your tank despite his incredible skill. Ness was hurt and didn't have the tank. Realbuto was a gamer, but didn't push pace like Nolf. Nolf is a different breed from anything in his path last year. The two gentlemen I watched wrestling with last night both expect I-Mart to beat Nolf in a close match at the BIG. I pick Nolf. Gas tanks don't slump and Nolf is the perfect storm of speed and endurance to cause fits for I-Mart. Both of my buddies wrestled at the D1 level and agree Nolf is one of the best Freshman to come along in awhile. I think he is ahead of where DT was at this point.

What about Zain? Remember, Z-Pain wrestled as a trFR and beat Steiber....imagine what Zain would have done last year if he red-shifted his trFR year instead of last year!!

Believe me I never forget about Zain! He is the guy I'm afraid is in my house when a noise wakes me in the night. Zain has improved so much since that true freshman year when he was quite amazing to begin with. (How can this be true? Cael can't develop guys) If the bulk of that improvement would have been the first year you may be right. Different animals altogether between Zain and Nolf. Zain rips your arm off and feeds it to you while Nolf kills you softly. I like watching both, but Nolf just reminds me of his coach who I sat front and center and watched his entire career in Ames. I'm staying with Nolf.

Z-Pain and Smackintosh remind me of the way gorillas fight when they get riled up and decide to "go" (as in too the death). They get on top of their advesary and jump up and down and beat on them like a jackhammer. Know what I'm talking about with gorillas - ever see a film of them in a serious fight when they're in "protect what's mine mode"?

I consider Zain a whole other level of mean even compared to MM. I see Metcalf in him. My buddy Chuck compared him to Mark Ironside last night. Good company.

I know you are just messing around, but I really wish folks would just drop all reference to the "Sanderson can't coach or develop" stuff. Even in jest, it's way beyond tired and lame.

It's ,interesting that this is mentioned again. This evening my wife and I rewatched both the OSU/PSU match from the BTN, and then the segment of Big Ten in 60 minutes. Sometime during the second segment, wife turns to me and says "Our coach never says anything during the matches". She had been watching other schools coaches up on their feet, yelling instructions, and/or getting in the refs faces, whereas Coach Cale never is seen other than sitting somewhat calmly on his seat. Please offer some insight to what I can say to my wife......and thanks in advance!!!

couple of things here...
first of all Cael can't coach? - doesn't even merit a response. We shouldn't be baited on this board.
- most wrestlers can't hear the coach and by the time they do the opportunity is lost.
- Cael coach's in the room where it is learned.
- he does say some stuff... just not a lot.

He speaks to his wrestlers but never panics. What you see from a lot of other coaches is stress and panic. Cael coaches much like Russ Rose ( and John Wooden).

I think the statement was sarcasm mixed with a compliment. No offense taken on my part James.

Show your wife video or photo of Q decking Gambrall in 2011 NCAA's. Sanderson is rather excited in the background. A signature moment for Cael and Q.

Someone had a great photo of that shot attached to a message recently - looking past a "fuzzy" Q to Cael in focus getting ready to slap the mat. It had a photographer's watermark on it. Do any of you fellas know where I might find that photo for sale? I'd love to get it as a gift for my father. He still talks about that moment. Which of us who saw it doesn't?!

Thank you Goldbanger. I would assume anyone who has read my verse knows I am highly complimentary of Coach Cael. I am also a huge fan of many of your wrestlers. I am always going to be a wrestling fan first and an Iowa/ISU homer second. I have refrained from posting for several years on any rivals board, but decided to join the conversations at the bequest of another frequent poster who shall remain unnamed unless he outs himself. I don't consider myself a wrestling expert, but have watched the sport intently for over 30 years, wrestled all through high school and college, and assist in youth coaching still today.
I am fairly certain I will offend at times, entertain at times, and once in a great while shock the conscience with a statement so bizarre even I don't actually believe it. I really despise any personal attacks on collegiate athletes no matter school affiliation. I do believe coaches are open for critical analysis at times. I bid you good day.

Yeah, I posted this recently. Gettyimages.com has a bunch of wrestling and other sport photos. Not sure if they sell finished images, pictures, etc. but you might try to contact them.

Agree with your very positive comments on Nolf, and looking forward to his next matchup with I-Mar, which I assume will be the B1G finals.
I think I-Mar will forego the constant attempts at throws, and concentrate on another weapon, his strong single and double-leg takedowns. He can score on Nolf, but I don't think he can avoid the effects of Nolf's constant activity. It could be close for 2 periods, but not close in the 3rd period, and still a good chance of back points and a pin by Nolf.

Sounds like a good idea. ;)

A couple things that make that picture iconic:
1. great human interest about Quentin's comeback from injury
2. more than that, that picture marked a NEW ERA, a CHANGING OF THE GUARD, where the Hawkeyes lost the dominant position in college wrestling to Penn State.

Looks like you're having a hard time dealing with it.

If you could comprehend, you'd understand the pic is about Cael's rare display of emotion. Just because a Hawkeye is in the photo don't assume that it is about a Hawkeye. In this case you're just window dressing, but if you want to feel offended or gripe to validate to yourself that you are the hardcore defender of perceived Hawkeye injustices then go ahead and put that crown on, Emperor.

Fall by Q was in the NCAA semifinals and pretty much secured the team title so LMAO right back at you.

Most of the photos of Hawkeyes having their way with Penn State wrestlers go back to the days before digital cameras so they're harder to find on the interwebs.

Still say Q was one of the funnest wrestlers to watch. How about his NCAA Title his last year against Kilgore? Nobody really gave him much of a chance (most thought Kilgore was too powerful for him.....or vice versa - Q didn't have enough raw power and strength at 97), but Q pretty much goes right at him and pretty much dominates star-to-finish considering his opponent's accomplishments.

You're being a bit sensitive. The discussion naturally flowed into Cael being calm vs. excited in matches, and why wouldn't that one come up on a Penn State board? It's not a statement about Iowa, it's about the Penn State coaches being excited during the national semifinals.

On the other hand ... HR has a current thread initially about Martinez -- that the very 3rd post laid into PSU fans. Completely unprovoked -- as of last night, there were zero PSU posters on that thread.

There are fans of both teams who let the other live in their heads so much, that they should start charging rent.

As an aside, some minor silliness from the Ohio State board (emphasis mine):

I think PSU has one sure-fire national champion if he stays healthy Zain. I think Nolf and Nickel can win championships but it will be a tall order. Can Nolf beat Ian miller and IMar in one weekend? I don't know. NATO was able to beat top tier opponents as a redshirt freshman at NCAA'S last year but its no guarantee for Nolf. I think Miller matches up well against him and can beat him with his experience. I also believe IMar beats him 9/10 times. Similarly to when Zain beat Logan a few years ago a lot of variables went in Nolf favor. I think Nickel has the smallest margin of being the champ this year out of PSU number one ranks. I can see his style costing him because the big move isn't always there. Someone will slow down the pace, hold great position, and make it a one takedown match. I simply like Cox over McIntosh. I think Zain and McIntosh are their finalist. I think Nolf, Nico take third, Conway and Nickel gets fifth. I project 6 AA for PSU with one champion.

I was pursuing a photo of a moment in PSU wrestling that means something to my father and me, WildTurk. I didn't care then and don't care now whether the guy counting lights was a Hawkeye. The moment was big because the guy pinning him is one of our favorite all time PSU wrestlers (and yes, we've shared a love for PSU wrestling since the late 1970's when I was just big enough to go to matches with him. If, like Iowa fans like to claim about Penn State followers, fans can only become fans when their team is winning strings of championships, then that's about when Iowa fans started caring about wrestling because Gable was getting his dynasty underway ). The moment was big because it was a flashy, dramatic win by Quentin Wright, a local kid who did things the right way, a kid who went through a lot of stuff off the mat to become a champion, and whom my dad once met quite by chance and of whom he has high regard. The photo is also noteworthy because Cael Sanderson was uncharacteristically animated in the shot (not every coach jumps around like an overcaffeinated leprechaun in every match), and because the photographer just plain had a great angle and composition on the shot. I typically like your posts, WildTurk. You're a great addition to this forum, but you're taking this all wrong. Listen, I understand we all have those fan moments that we'd like to forget (Bonomo over Martin - several times, Jenkins over Taylor, Mohammedi over Kolat, Greenlee over McCoy, etc.), but my pursuing this photo isn't a thumb to the nose to, or any business of, Iowa fans. For goodness sake, you guys have had more moments like this to cherish than anyone except maybe the Pokes' fans. Let me have this one without your Freudian input. :)

What does how NaTo did last year have to do with anything? Also, how many times can somebody put "I think" in a post as if it makes the picks more relevant? When somebody writes that they're taking NaTo @25, I-Mar @57, J-DCox @97 and, welll, he never did say who he was taking @74 (LMFAO - Bo is going to finish 5th? Who are all these wrestlers that are going to finish in front of him, let alone win it all, - I mean Bo's beaten most of the rest of the top 5 already, no?) - anyway, when somebody writes these picks for nationals, they don't need to keep saying "I think", that is implied by saying my pick at this weitht is this, at this weight is this, etc...

BTW, I have a new nickname for Bo after reading this lame-o post......."5-cent".

Since many here are reliving the Q pin of Gramball, can't help but recall an interesting exchange in Philly. I had the honor of sitting beside the "hat lady" who leads the Hawks cheers (our sections were next to each other) and had a great time talking wrestling with her. Just before the bout she told be Q would win and having seen Gambrall handle him in the post HS all-star meet in Iowa and then again in Rec Hall I wasn't as sure as she was!

I think she may know more wrestling than I do! and Oh, yes I do try to track her down to say hello at the NCAAs to say hello. Nothing in my book says we have to be bitter rivals....there are great fans on both sides and a few not so great ;)

Since I haven't read the thread I am not positive, but my guess is he (ohio st poster) is working hard to make the math read right. You know. What needs to happen for the Ohio State Nature Nuts to repeat. At 174 he probably has Martin finishing 1st, as well as both Jordan's and Snyder. NATO and Snyder are strong possibilities.

Rumor is that since the rec hall student section wasn't there to coach Q up for the Kilgore match....Sandy Stevens is said to have whispered scouting information to Q after the parade of champions on Kilgore that she had been keeping in her secret diary at the press table.

As we all know cael can't coach and so there must be some other reason Q changed things up for final where he conquered the unconquerable and won the team another title.

Then again this is just a rumor maybe there were students near the mat that night.

I contacted Getty Images about that print in question. The girl on the phone said $150 for one print. I almost choked. I'm hoping she misunderstood me. Maybe she thought I wanted to buy rights to it. IDK. I just emailed my question to them. Hopefully a simple 8"x10" isn't truly $150. If so, Dad might just get a stick figure drawing...
