when they changed the rules of the game .....for the sole purpose of being able to fit more commercials into a 3 hour TV window (one of the things that still amazes me is how many "NFL Fans" are completely oblivious as to the fact that the NFL essentially eliminated 1/3 of the game - and replaced it with more commercials...and they still sit through the God-awful boring games).

That being said.....if 1/2 of this stuff about Goodell and the Patriots is true (and I don't know if it is).....it has got to:

- be the end of Goodell
and
- really make NFL "fans" rethink the degree to which they have been hoodwinked

The NFL has been dead to me for years.
yeah, because college football is pristine and so much more competitive. GTFOH!!!
I like college football, NFL football is the best of the best. The rest go get a job.

I rarely watch and don't begrudge anyone who does. Probably because I'm a Steelers fan and live in DC, so I don't get many games in the market. I have zero interest in other teams or 'big games' that don't involve the Steelers, but even when they're on, I don't plan my day around watching them. I will if I have nothing else to do.

I was a huge NFL fan for years. But, I haven't watched any NFL for several years and I don't miss it. Don't miss the hype, the drama, the commercials, etc. But, that's me. It actually amazes me how quickly I lost complete interest. No single cause that I can identify.

90% of people I know who watch do so because of their Fantasy Football Leagues. I don't play FF, so it doesn't matter to me.

The rules changes in the early 2000's make it unwatchable for me. Agree that if you dont have a rooting interest its too boring to watch random teams.

Well....if this ESPN article is to be believed (and it is by VanNatta, perhaps the best in the biz and a guy who was sympathetic to Joe), one has to ask what corruption hasn't been unmasked? If this is considered acceptable behavior, in fact complicit behavior by Goodell and the Pats, is it beyond reason that the league is fixed? (at least some games?)

Marketing to women has been pretty genius too. Before, most women didn't care and watching football was a sausage fest. Now, they have nice fitting cute NFL clothes to wear and every Sunday they feel included (even if they don't give a crap). My wife loves to be included in stuff even if she hates it.

Not to mention how much they have to have someone on to explain the rules to the audience. Shouldn't the audience know the basic rules of the game? It is a combination of things IMO. First off, lots of fantasy league idiots who don't know anything about the game. Less people play the game now. And also, the rules change so much, no one can keep up.

You never have to have someone come on during and English Premier game and explain the rules to the fans.

Modern football at every level is played by the coaches more than the players. The rules are twisted to benefit the offense, making "great" defenses a mere shell of what they used to be. Plus with all the "specialists" on the field on any given play, is there a player in the league (besides QBs and OL) who could legitimately play an entire game? Honestly, I can think of only a handful of today's players who would survive in the NFL of yesteryear.

Agree....plus, cannot STAND the yuck-it-up, goofball antics on pregame and halftime shoes. Sorry but Howie making fun of Marino who is making fun of Bradshaw and some former, criminal NFL legend saying that a team "just has to want it more", "give 110%", "play for his brothers" is off putting. I can tell you, for certain, that I have zero interest in the guy who grew up on the mean streets of "X" to a single mother and a brother that is in jail for dealing drugs. The human interest stories have become cliche. And don't get me started on Chris Bermen.

Um, I'll take Katy Perry drinking booze on TV, even in that ridiculous shirt (she was seriously the best College Gameday guest ever). Having said that, I don't watch the pre-game shows, especially ESPN's. I do watch some of the BTN's coverage when they go to the different venue's for the day for updates. Just give me the freakin' news, you know, and maybe a bit about the campus atmosphere. Nothing worse than watching seventeen grown men in ill fitting suits with ridiculous tie knots sitting around a gigantic table screaming at each other before a football game.

I like Katy....singing. I don't like Katy prepping me for college football. And watch these guys pretend to be surprised...didn't they see that plate of wings and a corndog place there by the support staff next to KP's seat? Its just distasteful. I feel like I am being talked down to.

Yeah, and without Fowler, who was the *only* reason to watch before, it's completely worthless now. Corso just turned 80!!! He's the best they can do?? Should have been fired after his failed attempt at child molestation humor during our game.

I watch the NFL but I am not passionate about it. It's entertainment, no different than watching a movie. I have friends who watch the games religiously and for most of them, it's a diversion from the stresses of everyday life. It gives them something to talk about around the water cooler and a reason to suck up some beer and pizza without feeling badly about it. My life continues to move further and further away from watching sports, and more toward reading books, walking, and spending more time with my wife and family, but that does not make me any better than anyone else. To each his own.

Totally agree....I am no longer "invested" in the NFL. While a lifelong Steeler fan who has lived in CLE for all of my adult life, it is a crime what the NFL did to the Browns. I get that the Browns have been the worst managed franchise in the last 20 years, but there are reasons why it started so bad for them in 1999.

Absolutely agree on the Browns.

I really love the announcer conversations about contracts and court hearings dealing with the players during the majority of the plays. Who wants to hear down, distance, ball carrier, tackler and strategy tips. These new guys make me miss John Madden...never thought I'd say that....

What on gods earth are you talking about? Please explain this "Running Clock" change and when it happened?
Not sure what year it was changed but the timing rule now reads, "With the exception of the last two minutes of the first half and the last five minutes of the second half, the game clock will be restarted following a kickoff return, a player going out of bounds on a play from scrimmage, or after declined penalties when appropriate on the referee’s signal."

Games used to be timed like the last 2 minutes of the first half and the last five minutes of the second half. Now the clock starts as soon as the ball is made ready for play.

I'll just say it - I stopped watching for the most part years ago when I realized the Patriots were cheating. As I began to say on Friday, if Goodell had it in him, he'd revoke the Patriots franchise, boot them from the league, and that would be it. But the NFL is about $$$$$, not about the integrity of the game.

  1. The NCAA should come up with a consistent set(s) of academic standards that all student athletes should adhere to, if a student-athlete can't make the grade, they're out.
  2. The NFL should create their own minor league for high school students who don't want to go to college.
Of course, nobody is going to do any of this - there is too much $$$$$ flowing around the top of the NCAA & NFL, an NFL minor league for kids out of high school would not make money, etc.

I wasn't going to be patient enough to inform anyone who wasn't aware. You're a nicer man.

It amazed me at the time of those changes, that most of the self-identified "NFL Fans" I knew had no idea that anything was different. Back then, I was still watching a decent amount of NFL.....but that was the last straw for me.
Most folks seemed to be blissfully unaware that now teams may only have 3 possessions in the entire first half.......with the rest of the time filled by even more commercials. I will guarantee you, there are periods in any NFL game where you can go 20 minutes with no more than three plays from scrimmage

I can't imagine the tedium of actually sitting in an NFL stadium for 1 1/2 hours in order to see three possessions per team.......or having entire games where "my team" runs 50 plays.
What do they do for the rest of the three hours? Sit and look at an empty field? I really don't know, since I haven't attended a game live since the running clock came into play. Maybe they spend most of their time in the stands with their face in an IPhone, checking up on fantasy stats :)

The NFL has a lot of folks addicted - maybe, as some pointed out, it is the Fantasy Football folks that drive the revenue.

No thanks.

If you are interested, spend one game clocking the time that the game clock is running.....when it wouldn't have been under the old rules.

Then you tell me - or whomever might be interested - how much of the "game" is no longer played.

Enjoy.

FWIW, the first thing discussed when the edict came down from the TV folks to give them more commercial time - but to keep the "games" at no more than 3 hours - was to shorten the quarters to 12 minutes each. The NFL decided against that, figuring that fans would object.......so they did the same thing with the running clock.....and 90+% of the fans weren't even paying enough attention to notice :)

I'm not trying to make some argument for College Football being "better than" the NFL.

I was aware of the NFL changing the rule about stopping the clock on plays that went out of bounds. That was quite a while ago. I believe it was in response to so many teams throwing the ball and receivers stepping out of bounds. Now, when it happens, except in the last two minutes of each half, the clock starts when the ball is set for play.
By the way, NFL games rarely fit into that 3 hour time frame today. Games today begin at 1 PM and then between 4:15-4:30.
My team runs more plays than any NFL team, by far, so I'm OK with the running clock.

The NFL is the best of the best players. Have you noticed that even when a roster is close to being set, moves are made to upgrade specific teams when a better player than they have, is cut.

As Buddy Ryan so famously said, there are no East Carolinas in the NFL. Everyone gets paid to play as well as they can play. There are no 20,30 point betting lines in the NFL.

I go to see high school games on Friday nights, watch or go to college games on Saturdays and watch or go to NFL games on Sundays. My expectations for the level of play of each of them is different.

Now, questions for you. Do you live in State College? Could it be that your view is skewered by living in a college football kingdom? How many Penn State players in a four year period, make the NFL? There are 12,800 FBS football players. I have no idea how many play in the divisions under that, but it is a lot. There are 1696 NFL roster spots. It is an exclusive club. Why would anyone think college football is better or more competitive than NFL football?

We are talking about COMPLETELY different things. I specifically stated earlier - I would absolutely not be one to argue the plusses and minuses of College vs NFL. To each his own....and your points about "athletic talent" and all that are certainly valid......and there are PLENTY of issues with regard to College Football, for sure...and I wouldn't argue against anyone who preferred one over the other. I probably enjoy going to the local HS games more than EITHER PSU or NFL games - so I obviously value things other than the "athletic talent" level in whether or not I enjoy the sport.....but that's just me.
Although I will just say that this "I believe it was in response to so many teams throwing the ball and receivers stepping out of bounds" is simply not true. It was to maximize revenue by acceding to the demands of the networks.....clearly.

I do admit though, that I do find it "humorous" that folks who consider themselves informed NFL fans aren't even aware of changes like this that effect the game (and this, obviously excludes you).....but they would probably know the career "fantasy point numbers" of Dez Bryant (if there is such a thing).
Again, not my Ox being gored, so I really shouldn't care.....it is just kind of a statement on how "sports fandom" has changed in the ESPN/RedZone/Fantasy Football age.

Hey....knock yourself out. It doesn't take ESP or Mensa membership to watch a game clock.

It ain't my Ox being gored. Seriously. I don't care about that game anymore.....others do.

I've got no problem with ANYONE absolutely loving the NFL if they so choose.

If I have ANY issue it is with the NFL......for whoring out "the game" and their fans in order to make a few more sheckels.

THAT is my point (if I have one :) )

Another element that is killing the future of the NFL is that in most cities you simply can't take a kid to the game. They will see and hear things that are not right for a kid to see or hear and they could even be subjected to risk to physical injury. Heck, you could walk by the wrong NFL tailgate wearing your Steelers or Eagles gear and you could have to physically defend yourself.

Barry, until last season, I had no idea I was getting NFL Red Zone. One Sunday, my daughters and my son in laws came for dinner. I had to hit the head. When I came out, Red Zone was on. Since then, I watch it as a "Last" on my remote, while I'm watching the Eagles. I enjoy the red zone aspect of it. I'm not a Fantasy Football guy. In fact, I hate Fantasy Football. I'm not into drafting Dallas Cowboys then rooting for the them to do well so my FF team can win. Ain't happening.

I understand....and. really, even those "Fantasy" guys (and there seem to be MILLIONS of them) - more power to 'em....whatever they find entertaining.

It is a VERY different "sports fan" demographic from what it was 20-30 years ago....FOR SURE.

Heck, I am COMPLETELY uninterested in the NBA....but some folks (including one of my own kids) LOVES it. Good for them.

As I said, if there is any aspect that bothers me it is the NFL whoring out the game.
