Sitting up high, viewing the field at a nice angle that afforded good depth perception, shielded from the sun, my old roommate and I shared our first impressions of the game:
WEATHER: What a day! Absolutely gorgeous. Perfect for two old goats to sit back and savor the potential playing forth beneath us. The Future looks good! 13-0?
CROWD: Early on the crowd was thin, probably because they were all playing, tailgating, etc. in the parking lots. Then as 2 pm approached, the place filled up. Went from 40k to 50k to I thought pushing 60k. I see 65 was estimated, but they tend to be a bit generous with those numbers, in the spirit of Spring.
FAST!: the pace of the game sure was a "fur piece" from the plodding of old. From the Git Go to the end. Wow! Highly entertaining. ( unless youre a D-Lineman.)
TEMPO: Both QBs didnt let any moss grow under their feet. No longer could you time a play with a sundial.
1-2-3 - and the ball was either gone, or the QB was (... off and running.)
THE WHOLE FIELD: Left. Right. Counters. Options. Flats. Post patterns. The ball moved all over the field. Even a few passes were thrown well downfield. Most were on the money. McS looked damned good! And that one pick came from db ( was it Owuaryie (sp)? - and that probably came because theyve played against each other a lot this Spring and he anticipated it well. )
TIMING. TIMING. TIMING: Time and time again, the ball left McS's hand as or before the receiver made his cut.
TE's BACK IN PLAY: Didnt take long til #88 and then #89 had their first catches. Hallelujah! Even the early arrival TE Dalton caught at least one.
NO BARKS: No surprise. But #8 showed well really both running and receiving. And that long TD run by #6 bode well for September. Outran the DBs down the sideline. all 5-9, 213# of him.
PA SYSTEM: Say what? All we heard was muffled bass with not an intelligible word. Had to read the video board to have a feel for what was happening. Who was that team they introduced? I saw a photo of Joe go up so figured it was one of his. Nice touch to introduce the incoming Class of 2016 players. Wonder what their names were. (audio.) On the way out we heard plenty of voice quality audio blasting away so maybe the bank of speakers serving the underside of the deck where we were was out of commission.
The above were first impressions of the game without having read anything on here. I drove up Friday ( 7 hrs) and back home Sat after the game. In between was fun. Great dinner at The Tavern ( window by College Ave so we may have seen YOU walk by) followed by another bottle of wine later that evening.
My buddy has a Lab ( his third) and driving up on Fri I listened to a C/W station that played " Your ole hound dog,....sure looks a lot like you. Yes, your ole hound dog, sure looks a lot like you. When I see that hound dog, I get the ...How-wouuuuund, Daw-wahggg, Ba-Lewzzzzzzzzzz." I sang it for my buddy and his wife over dinner, telling them how much it reminded me of Jim.
PS: I watched Lime non-stop coaching his OLmen during the entire warm-up period before the game. Very encouraging, and it fits in with what Ive read on here about his detailed coaching skills.
I spent most of my time watching the OL. Good to see the RshFr and so many of the young players in there as well as the vets. We will see most of them for the next 4 years, as our OLine play ramps up.
And Stevens can throw the long ball, plus isnt afraid to stick his nose into the line. He must have had a half-dozen nice runs up the middle that ended when he was touched. Looks like he can break some, one of these days. TWO mobile QBs who are quick and decisive should make for some fun times in the ole Beav in years to come.
