In the big picture Franklin is still overachieving

He and O'Brien had an extreme uphill climb. He had this program in the top 10 for almost a year straight. Something we have rarely seen in the past 20 years at PSU.

Recruiting rankings:

2013: 43
2014: 24
2015: 15
2016: 21
2017: 12

The 2018 class is ranked #2.
Based on recruiting this program should continue to get more dominant over the next couple of years.

The fact that Franklin has already won a B1G title is amazing. PSU never won consecutive B1G titles. 1994-95 and 2008-09 were the best chances. I was hoping this would be the first time, but we'll have to wait.

The past is just that now. His players will now fill all the positions next year but they will be another year away. How many 4/5 yr starters will be gone along with SB next yr. The "totality" of those players are difficult to replace.

Sadly CFB is now heading in the same direction as college basketball because of the lure of the 'next level and the riches that go with it'

I am most pleased with his very honest assessment of the team yesterday in his post game. He recognizes that we have a problem in the run game and that our O-lineman are too soft and finesse types. He also recognized that we simply are not getting pressure on opposing QB's regardless of how many we bring. Its not much, but at least he recognizes our problems and is not deflecting. Franklin knows that we need to be dominant on both lines to win a championship...hopefully his recruiting and player development start to mirror this over time.

Barkley is a unique talent but how hard is it really to replace his role in this offense?

Unlike basketball, it is essentially impossible for many positions to "go pro" after only a year or so. Perhaps the DBs can do it. No one else could.

There is more physical development required to succeed, especially along the lines, but also at LB and TE.

You could certainly make the argument that Barkley has at times made this team look much better than it really is. Take Barkley off the team, and we lose at least 3, maybe 4 games last year. We lose at Iowa this year, most likely.

If Barkley isn't here, and he's only one guy, we're probably average at best over the last 1.5 seasons.

Some of OB's players are still here as well as Franklin's first class which was a scramble at the finish, we will be better. I trust he will get us to the top, the Rashan Gary types are coming in.
