and we stunk defending the pass against Minny. We need to win out. And we can do it.

I have a feeling they are going to pick on #29.

Also, watching many of our games this year where Sean Clifford struggles to find an open receiver, yet our defense seems to leave receivers open all the time? My guess is that our defensive backfield is not properly schemed? Also, also, another observation I have, did anyone notice that the past few years when we have an opponent pinned deep inside their territory say on inside their 5, they are able to then have a big play 10+ yards that gives them breathing room? Just saying this is something I observed the past few years which makes me think when we have a team pinned deep we seem to not have correct play calls to keep them pinned deep?

IU isn't a pass-first team. In fact they're quite balanced. But I'm guessing they'll try to pass first vs PSU

Heck, Rutgers better be a pass first, second and third team against us until we prove we can stop it.

You "nailed it".....We have let teams come out from the 2-5 YL so many times, and Saturday with the PI against Reid was just another disaster. Reid was covering like it was his first time he was on the field putting his hands all over the WR with the Side Judge standing there 10 feet away!

After last week's performance, I'd say they have a lot of options to "pick on". My guess is they will target TCF quite a bit...he got beat like a drum by Minnesota.
Every week is different. Unless Indiana has an OLine as good as Minny’s and receivers that are equally as good as Minny’s, there’s nothing pointing to them having the same success as Minny. Matchups are different in every game. Momentum is different in every game. Also, we’re home not away. It’s a different game and a different day.

In this case, maybe they should have a Yamaha drums tee shirt you have to wear on the sideline ?

It's not just teams getting breathing room. They also convert a lot of 3rd and long situations. PSU brings LBs and maybe a safety to the LOS. That leaves big gaps in the defense. Big trouble if they can't get to the QB.

Google the below, appears they just lost their starting QB for the year, so that might make their offense not quite as good as it was all year. If PSU cannot be an Indiana team that just lost their starting QB for the year, then there is some pretty big issues.

https://www.indystar.com/story/spor...-penix-jr-indiana-football-season/4169806002/

IU football loses Michael Penix Jr. for the season

IU uses (well, used) 2 QBs, both with similar results. Penix is a better athlete, but Ramsey is just as effective as a QB

Penix is far more elusive, so if we get pressure, we've got a much better chance of taking Ramsey down for sacks.

That is really the key to this entire defense. Fail to get pressure, and he's going to have lots of opportunities to find open receivers. And they have some good receivers.

I have a feeling that we're going to get into the backfield more than we did in Minneapolis. Minny has the better O-line, we're at home, we get Shelton back, and I'm hoping we come out and play angry. Get pressure on the QB, and we roll. Otherwise, this could get interesting.

Won’t happen. I was just being sarcastic. It is disturbing that we make every stiff QB look like the second coming of Joe Montana.
Only two QB’s all year have thrown for over 300 yards against us...only one has thrown for more than 1 TD pass. Maryland’s QB passed for 65 yards and 0 TD’s...Purdue’s QB passed for 119 yards and 1 TD...Lewerke threw for 165 yards and 0 TD’s....I didn’t realize Montana’s numbers sucked so bad...overreact much?

From the limited games of IU's I've seen I think they have 1 WR every bit as good as Minny's and ours but not 3 like Minny. Before last sat I would have said I thought Ramsey was a better QB than Morgan. Lets just say I hope I was wrong.
Their Run game seems about as good but they do not have the OL that Minny does.
Defensively I dont think they are as good as Minny.
I think we win but It might be close like 34-24 or 34-31.

Yea, we're fine. Nothing to worry about.

Well, we certainly don’t make every mediocre QB look like Joe Montana. At least have some evidence to back up your outrageous claims.

I guess you didn't notice that the current Heisman Watch List consists of every quarterback Penn State has faced this year. Yes, including the two from Idaho.

How about the App St QB last year who also faced Reid, TCF, and Amani? JT Barrett was a mediocre passer and looked like Haskins against us...the Buffalo QB this year earned an NFL camp look vs us...Kenny Pickett of course had a great game...Patterson was very efficient as well...all u do is insult people who are mildly critical of PSU's pass defense, when it is you that has blinders on. Our secondary the last three seasons has had awful gaffs, poor fundamentals, not a hint of physicality and crumbles with big games on the line. How you can dispute that is laughable.

I'm not necessarily referring to this year. Without looking at stats...Pickett had probably his best game against us. The kid from MI that everybody talked down had his best game up to that day against us. Stanley @ Iowa had a lot of dropped passes if I recall. Tanner Morgan was 18/20 last week and one of the 2 was because his arm was hit. You can't deny that opposing WR's haven't been running around free for the past 4 seasons. Lewerke and Stanley have eaten our DB's alive in the past.

Of course, nobody can deny it, except a few on here who live, breathe, sleep with blue and white glasses on and anyone else's critical opinions are garbage. Bottom line, the sample size is large enough (spanning 3 yrs now) to say that this secondary has been an unmitigated disaster in big games and whether we play a mediocre qb or great one, we will collapse. Mentally soft team.

Really, now you’re going to cherry pick games from last year? I was responding to a post that said we make average QB’s look like Joe Montana and that’s just not true. The Buffalo QB had a whopping 245 yards with 1 TD and 1INT....not exactly Heisman worthy. Pickett had a lot of yards but 0 TD passes. Patterson had 276 yards, 0 TD’s and 1 INT....again, not really lighting it up. One QB really lit us up this year and that was Minny’s...339 yards and 3 TD’s....every other QB was bad to decent. If you’re going to criticize, at least be accurate.

I guess we just have different opinions of what getting lit up by a QB looks like.

Only if you cherry pick a few games.

I am accurate...those games were either the best comp % passing for those respective QB's, or at the top of their career stats. and yes, I'm cherry picking b/c the same two upperclassmen, Reid and TCF, are still here as they were the last few seasons, and haven't gotten better; not to mention, the same soft schemes are the same...nothing has changed. I have little faith our secondary will hold up vs IU and OSU, why would I think otherwise versus above average passing teams.

Because schemes change based on what you’re trying to stop. In the case of Pitt for example, the best bet at the time we played them was to stop the run and make Pickett beat you...guess what? He didn’t. Also things change if you jump out to a big lead (like we’ve done a couple of different games...Michigan for example)...then you soften up so you don’t get beat long for a quick score. That allows more passing yardage, but you hold them off to win...which we did. The best QB we’ve faced this year so far is probably Patterson and he didn’t beat us. I kept reading on here how Lewerke was going to kill us because he always lit us up in the past....we keyed on him and he had a whopping 165 yards with 0 TD’s and an INT....wow, history really told the tale there. Did you have faith before that game?

Good points...and no I didn't have faith before MSU b/c even though they are garbage this yr, there were even worse last year when Lewerke got benched for Lombardi who is awful...yet MSU came in here on Homecoming and beat us. I believe things when I see it from this team...I believe we can handle Iowa home/away b/c we've done it under JF....MSU owned us and finally we put a stop to that, at least this yr. I don't believe we can beat OSU, b/c we haven't beaten them on the road in seemingly forever. I've seen more evidence that this team folds up shop after a crushing loss without showing fortitude than the opposite, so that is what I'm going on. I think IU is a must win for JF and the team or the season is wrecked...not sure they can bounce back mentally.

Different players, different leadership. They may or may not bounce back, but with different players especially a different QB and playing against Indiana as opposed to MSU, it’s hard to use the past as an indicator of what will happen now.
