So quarantine has given me way too much free time and I thought I would create interactive conference wrestling brackets for anybody who wants to track the coming season. I know I enjoy guessing the Big 10 seeds and thought others might as well. Then, I basically combined what I do each year in comparing Big 10 wrestlers for tournament seeds and the NCAA Interactive brackets into one spreadsheet. (I must give credit to the Iowa board who I stole the interactive bracketing formulas from). I didn't work with him but in a way he laid the foundation for this project.

Then I repeated that for the other six conferences. Just note that the data (w-l records, conf. record, coaches rank, RPI, and wrestlestat rank) are just carry overs from the Big 10 wrestler who filled that slot (or who I thought would fill that slot when I did my predictions).

If you see any mistakes in team scoring, please let me know. I filled out the brackets with the results from this year just to make sure they were working and adding up scores correctly. I uploaded them to google drive just as excel documents. You can add them to your google drive and edit through sheets, but I am not sure if the formulas will copy over 100% correctly. Hopefully either way works.

USEFUL TIPS:

I have protected sheets so that the formulas cannot be manipulated without unprotecting that particular sheet. All of the cells that you need to use are open for editing.

Snapshot: This tab is all formulas; it should update automatically.

125 – 285: These next 10 tabs are the brackets. You want to use D (decision), M (major), T (tech), F (fall, injury default, DQ) in the highlighted yellow boxes. Sometimes X but I will get to that below.

Wrestlers: This page is also all formulas and really just powers other sheets in the document.

Team Detailed: Formulas where you can look team-by-team at how many points a particular individual scored.

Team Ranking: This is where you want to add team deductions (1, 2, 3, etc. and it will automatically deduct from the final team standings on the snapshot.

Team Prediction: Assuming all the favorites win by decision, how many points individuals/teams should score without bonus. All the way to the right is a chart that breaks down how many wrestlers from a team have a certain seed.

(Conference Name) Lineups: This is the page where you can update the wrestlers in each weight for example if you wanted to do this next year. This is also the page where you update a wrestlers W-L record, wrestlestat rank, coaches rank, RPI. The seeds should be adjusted on the 125R, 133R, etc.

When typing in wrestler’s names, make sure you use a space before the wrestler’s last name so that it shows up correctly in the results tabs (i.e. 125R) that follow. What will display on the final 10 sheets is available on the far right (these update automatically and are formula protected).

Examples
Two names: Brandon Meredith
Space in last name: Mike Van Brill will need to be typed Mike VanBrill to show correctly
Suffice: Chad Red Jr.: either type Chad Red or Chad RedJr.
Last name only: “space”Meredith

125R – 285R: This is where you enter the results against conference opponents and it will automatically calculate their conference record. You can see the note below on that page but basically it will count the capital “W” and capital “L” for each kids. The page reads straight across so to look at 125 Big 10 for example. Cardini is listed as WWW vs. Cronin and Cronin LLL vs. Cardini. So Cardini beat Cronin three times last year.

The conference record will automatically calculate in the first W/L column and then give you a percentage as well. The second W-L is just a formula from the first page and is their overall record.

Seeds on these pages is where you can adjust the matchups for the bracketing purposes. I figured this was the best place to put it on because here you can all the results against common opponents.

CR (coaches rank, RPI, WS (wrestlestat ranking) in columns B, C, D are just formulas from the lineups page.

Conference Specific Notes in regards to team scores

Big 10, EIWA, PAC 12, SoCon
These conferences do not use random draws in assigning byes so the wrestlers get seeded and placed in the bracket accordingly.

The scoring is based on a bracket being full for each of these conferences. However, if for example like a 174 where Indiana had an injury, put an X next to that wrestler advancing via bye (Lydy) into the quarterfinals so that the advancement point is not credited. However, if the wrestler wins his next bout after a bye, he does get credit for an advancement point and so change that result to a D and it will add the advancement point. You do not get “pin” points (2 additional) for a bye.

This is the same for consolation (0.5) and championship (1) brackets. An example of where the X would stay is shown in the consolation of the 125 SoCon bracket.

Big 10 specific notes: Advancement points are already set up to credit for the #1 and #2 seeds should they win their first match and get credit for two advancements. The rest will need to be done like explained above.

EIWA specific notes: The pigtail of the championship and preliminary is scored like a pig tail and so the #1 seed (and all others) who win their first match are credited with just one advancement point. At 125, the starter from LIU did not wrestle and I should have changed him to a bye which is why Frezza did not get advancement points. But at all the other weights you do get either 1 or .5 for advancing in the championship and consolation rounds and a point should be awarded for those matches only.

PAC 12 specific notes: They place all 6 wrestlers and so you are basically giving away 4 free placement points if you don’t enter wrestler. However, Little Rock did not have a heavyweight. In that case, you need to make sure the word “forfeit” is somewhere in that wrestler’s name in the lineup page so that it will know to take away all points that would have been earned for sixth place in that case.

SoCon specific notes: Just the reminder about using the X for advancement needs to be followed.

ACC specific notes: The ACC is the only conference that treats byes like “forfeits” and credits pin points (+2) for a forfeit and so every time there is a forfeit you should type F next to the advancing wrestler. The example of this is at 125. The 125 #1 and #2 seeds need to win their semifinal to get advancement points but #3 seed gets credit for 2 bonus points when a wrestler is not entered by one of the six teams.

Big 12, MAC
These conferences use the random draw of byes and so I have included 4 and 2 byes to place into the bracket at the corresponding seeds and fill the full 16. As reminder, seeds should be updated on the 125R – 285R tabs. These brackets only seed 8 and announce complete brackets closer to the start of the tournament. Because of that, timing will be difficult but really the 1-8 seeds score most of the points and unless there is an upset, the unseeded wrestlers are predicted for just .5 if they win a match against a fellow unseeded.

Use the X to advance the wrestlers to the quarterfinals (and consolations). Do not change that to a D if they win.

The formula is programmed to recognize if the wrestler received a bye as long as the X is used properly and the two advancement points will be credited if he wins the quarterfinal.

You can see this demonstrated at 125 where Alex Mackall and McGwire Midkiff are credited with 8 for advancing by decision while Cody Phippen gets just seven that quarterfinal round. However, that is because Mackall and Midkiff have 0 in the preliminaries and 8 (6 pts for guaranteed sixth and 2 advancement points) in the quarterfinals where Phippen has 1 (advancement point) in the preliminaries and 7 (6 for guaranteed sixth place and 1 advancement in the quarterfinals. Piccininni has more because he had a tech that round and get an extra 1.5 on top of his 8 after a first round bye for a tech fall in the quarterfinals.

By the way, I only have an account on this message board so feel free to share away as you see fit. Heck, you can even take credit for them. It will be worth it to me if people find them interesting. If not, at least I will.

Any mistakes or things you think could be made easier, just let me know.

Wow, thx for all the time and effort you put into this regularfan! I humbly genuflect in your direction and aspire to your excel skills. I wish I could develop (or poach) an interactive tournament bracket that would have a simplified method of inputting all the seeded wrestlers on one page and having the spreadsheet then correctly populate the brackets, regardless of tournament.

I probably won't look too closely at your sweet brackets until next season. Quite frankly, this off-season has become the awful-season for me. I'm still in mourning over the loss of natties, etc. And now I look dimly ahead to my professional cycling season being wrecked. Où es-tu parti mon amour Tour de France. :( I can barely bring myself to stop by my beloved BWI lately.

I like it ... here is a link to a click the winner bracket, must download and enable macros, don't update the links
just click the name of the winner, winner advances/loser drops

For anybody who is interested. I entered all of the data for the other conferences just to get an idea of how they seed. EIWA with its new seeding formula was the only one that did not appear to use head to head as the primary criteria. Seemed to really throw the brackets off in some weights compared to other conferences and how you would expect. I will be interested to see if they use that again next year.

X can be used to mark all forfeits in the brackets and it will update correctly for points if that person advances in the following round instead of having to go back and update. D, M, T, F are the other results.

Results vs. conference opponents (125R, etc.) only have to be entered above the XXXX's and the formula will carry underneath to reverse that result for the opponent. Results displayed do not include conference tournament results since they obviously weren't available for seeding.

Data is filled in for the year just as a template but feel free to ask any questions or point out anything that looks off because there is a chance I overlooked a mistake (hopefully not).

I have protected all of the formula cells so you can't damage the sheet other than entering bad information if you keep the sheets protected.
