Interesting article

One thing that intrigues me is that if you look at Iowa's 2020 roster there is only one (only an observation) person of color on the roster. If you look at the BIG10 Wrestling broadcast (frame by frame) of the Penn State at Iowa wresting match, I had a hard time finding persons of color as spectators, anywhere, in Carver Hawkeye Arena during the Penn State dual. Is this the culture of Tom Brands and Iowa wrestling?

I'm never ever shy about picking apart all things Iowa but on this one.....think I'll pass.

Stop. You don’t know this is the culture of that program. There are a lot of factors. Wrestling is not a largely inner city or African American sport. Throw Iowa demographics into the mix and there won’t be a big presence. Same for a lot of programs.

Who watches a sporting event frame by frame to observe the racial composition of the fans?

I hope nobody associates that with PSU culture.

You'd find the same situation in Montana, Idaho, North and South Dakota, Nebraska, Nevada, or Maine. It has nothing to do with a coach or a program. It's about demographics.

Moody, Lugo, and that's off-top.

... good coaches go wherever the top high school talent can be found...
... the fact that about half of the current No.1 team’s starting wrestlers have Pennsylvania roots is further proof... :)

Interesting article. I found the caption of the photo of Ruth to be a bit odd....

"Penn State's #2 ranked Ed Ruth looks into the crowd before his last match as a Nittany Lion Sunday afternoon...."
Given that Ed is my favorite PSU wrestler, I'd love for him to be back in the lineup this season. :D
He’s rather trim these days. 157?

Not that I’ve ever scanned our fans frame by frame, but I doubt you’ll find many people of color in the stands at a PSU home meet either.

Mainstream publications today are obsessed with the racial composition of everything. Perhaps dolecda is a nationally-syndicated columnist here to observe us wrestling fans.

It would be interesting for him to tell us why it's a culture problem that Iowa is so white anyway. Like, who cares?

As for me, I like to watch sports as a distraction from politics and, of course, the daily grind. However, some people can't help but politicize absolutely everything, leaving us with fewer and fewer outlets.

You could say the same thing about 83% of the other D1 wrestling teams. If you really want to get your mind blown then you should look at the basketball roster.
