i like this idea - courtesy of Carp (he may be an Iowa fan from other posts of his):

There is a way to fix this, but the Big Ten administrative powers won't do it.

Institute a system similar to English Premier League Soccer where there would be two divisions based on where teams finished the previous year (either matches or the tournament). Every year two teams are relegated (drop down) and two advance. This means that there is round robin among the top seven and among the bottom seven. Every team wrestles two matches out of their division. This insures that the best teams routinely wrestle each other. Attendance at these matches (and perhaps among the lower teams) will be enhanced. If, like Michigan State, the chances for advancement appear slim, there is an incentive to improve or, from the AD's point of view, fire the coach
.

As an EPL fan, I agree and think most sports should leverage this model. However, it makes to much sense, causes administrators to actually think and be somewhat fluid in scheduling and the fans would love it. So it will never happen...

Relegation Sunday in the English leagues is one of the most amazing days on the sports calendar. The stakes are enormous.

Real interesting idea. But what happens when the lower tiers--instead of responding positively to the incentives and disincentives--scrap their programs altogether when attendance drops. With the exception of this year's success of Leicester City, the EPL's tier system works primarily because crowds are guaranteed at all tiers (not to mention tradition and millionaires willing to invest long term). The idea presumes that the wrestling's health and popularity is greater than it is.

Testa, I believe I originally floated that idea three or four years ago. The feeling I got was, more likely that Cael will invite me over to his house for dinner next Sunday night after their dual than that actually gets implemented.

You haven't been invited yet? I'm surprised. I'll see what I can do. Keep in mind that you will have to wear something other than the gray sweats to dinner. ;)

(Totally tongue in cheek, for those that think otherwise. Just having a little fun with the Pirate.)

Cynic! ;)
