Their best 3 wrestlers are all mercenaries. They've done jack shit with their own recruits. Basically.... they're the new Michigan.

My thoughts on the Iowa-Stanford match.

125: Shame Provo couldn't go this weekend. If he had, the match most likely would have been 9-9 at break instead of 15-6.
133: Oof, bad loss for Ayala. Knox looked good and it's a great win for him, but there's no sugar coating that it's a bad loss for Ayala if he's a title contender.
141: Another oof. Valencia looked like the real deal. Block did not.
149: The first of the mercenaries looked great against a quality opponent. Slumlord Millionaire is doing his recruiting job much better than TnT. LOL. Abas didn't look good, either, though. Giving up all of those 4-point tilts in a row is inexcusable, but credit to Parco for continuing to do it until he was in position for the TF.
157: Another mercenary, another pretty impressive performance.
165: Woof. Caliendo was really lucky Garvin was wrestling/weighing in for the second day in a row and gassed halfway through. This should be an L for Cali (not a bad L since Garvin is really good), but I really hope Iowa wrestles UVU somewhere so Iowa fans can be treated to their supposed title contender losing to the PSU JV, LOL.
174: If Gabe can't beat Brands in a challenge, Iowa is in real trouble. Brands is awful and looks like he checked out with HEW long ago. I would be shocked if he AAs at all if he's the 174 by March. If Gabe wants to go 174, there is no excuse for him not to. If he's really up at 184 by his own choice, Iowa would be better letting PK go at 174.
184: Gabe looked fine, although against weaker competition. He definitely looks like a 174, not a 184, so I have no idea why he is tolerating being forced up. There's no way he isn't 100x better than Brands.
197: The mercenaries continue to clean up. Buchanan is clearly one of the favorites in March.
HWT: Kueter is a beast. He's going to give a lot of people big problems. He looks like he's still finding confidence in his game at this level and should have destroyed that tub of goo much faster, but once he figured out that that kid offered no resistance at all, it went quickly from there. He should start putting away gimme matches like that much faster as the season progresses. It'll be fun to see him against real competition once the B1G schedule starts. He should end up as a high AA. He's one of the most athletic heavies I can remember and reminds me most of Kyle Snyder.

This is one match, in November, so it's far too early to draw any conclusions from it, but it was not a great showing for Iowa, especially their home grown recruits.

Didn’t you just draw a bunch of conclusions from it tho?

😝 Just bustin your chops, Random. Nice assessment.
I suppose so, LOL. The only real long term conclusion I got is that Brands is checked out with one of the most severe cases of HEW in recent years. Guys like Ayala and Caliendo have time to right the ship.

If Iowa isn't able to get new transfers next year, can they field a top 6 team in 2026? They will have Ayala, Keuter, and Arnold, so maybe 40-50 points. Three AAs max.

After watching Barraclough wrestle in the finals this year Penn State will need a restraining order to keep the slumlord out of Lorenzo with his money bags.

Unfortunately you may be right. Kids with eyes on freestyle may not be swayed but guys having a hard time making 1st team may be tempted. I hope not but it is a reality.

Slum lord will pony up big bucks again to try and keep Iowa relevant. Unfortunately for iowa its going to be every yr they’ll need big bucks bob to help brands stave off the natives. Don’t see any top recruits wanting to go there anymore. Unless they just want money.

Recruiting your rivals backups is a tough path to a championship.
Iowa has adjusted. There is a collective understanding Penn State is out of reach. The plan now is to finish second more than once or twice a decade, so Penn State's backups will give them a shot at finishing ahead of Taylor's Cowboys.

I think you're right, but also believe Iowa loses that bet. DT is already recruiting better than Iowa and it's not really close.

Keuter vs Hoffman will be an interesting match.

Saw the interview with Parco. He comes across as a nice kid. Hopefully Brands doesn’t rub off on him while he’s there at Iowa.

Caliendo, Ferrari and Kennedy. 90 points. I suspect they’ll manage a transfer or two, giving them over 100.

Next year is the last for super seniors. Maybe the mercenary market will shrink after that.

Iowa Defers Life would've also worked.
Meh….Iowa HAS a Women’s program and Life has a great men’s program with lots of National Champions. Maybe their women’s team is good too. It doesn’t feel like much fun picking on a team we are not in competition.
