Is Michigan the best school when you factor in sports & academics?

Academically speaking, Michigan is respected across the globe.

Michigan also the only school currently ranked in top 10 in football, basketball and hockey
1) That's a given. Nothing new. Try Northwestern for Big Ten top dog.
2) You hit the nail on the head with the word Currently. Come on back after you've made your reservations for Indianapolis.

Currently ='s. Even after Michigan loses to Seton Hall tonight in basketball?
That's a chuckler.

I've gotta go with Arizona State University. Their Honors College is nonpareil.

This is peak Michigan arrogance.

Puffing out their chests on a sports forum about their academic prowess.

From a fan who almost certainly didn't go to Michigan. #WalmartWolverine

Reminds me of Jimmy Lake claiming before the UW-Oregon game that UW recruits a higher academic brand of kids than Oregon. Not only is that inaccurate, but a lame attempt to distract from Oregon's dominance over UW in football. Sounds like Michigan fans resorting to the academic argument after another late season football collapse.

Classic.

Realizing that most "fans" of college athletics are only thinking of football and men's basketball that's a hard question to answer. However, if you actually are considering all sports - men and women - and academics then both Stanford and Duke say Hello.
Purely academically I think Stanford and Duke are a step above Michigan; ND is on the same level and all the other schools mentioned are a tier (or more) below.

Is NW ranked ahead of Michigan in academics? Not sure they are

Going by my experience teaching some elite HS students, Michigan has actually been easier to get into than the university of maryland

The one they just beat us on our home turf is probably on his mind. Guess that makes them better for now
Yeah, but they have 1/2 a MNC in about a century and conference title in the last 15-20 years.......not exactly great. Above average could be used I guess. I mean they could give Ted a participation trophy I guess.

Duke 5
NU. 9
U of M 24
ND. 28

Per WSJ. 2022 College Rankings.

Saw them ahead of ND, Duke and NW in CWUR Ranking. Guess there are many rankings. Again, not defending UM or OP in any way but to assume Michigan isn’t a stellar university academically is just foolish.

Yup.
Two of my Spartan undergrad B in L's graduated from their law school.

Let’s say we start with the top 15 or so 2021 directors cup schools, since there is more to life than stick and ball sports:
Texas
Stanford
Michigan
North carolina
Florida
USC
Alabama
Arkansas
Ohio state
Georgia
Uva
Ky
UCLA
Notre dame
Lsu

While us news is of course a shot storm the only ones from that list in their top 25 are:
Stanford
Nd
Ucla
Michigan
Uva

I’d go Stanford, Michigan, ucla, uva, and Nd. Nd last because of its smaller profile.

honorable mention: Texas unc, fla

Florida, Stanford, UCLA, USC, Duke, Cal, Notre Dame are probably all better than Michigan from an academic/athletic balance standpoint.
Cal?! Again, I ask, Cal?! Perhaps if you place a high value on the Olympic sports (e.g., swimming, water polo, mens' gymnastics, rugby, etc.) But not if you place much value on football or mens' basketball.

Edit: UCSD 43

Per WSJ. 2022 College Rankings.
Both the WSJ rankings and the USN&WR rankings use metrics that heavily favor private schools. For YEARS, the TOP public school has come in around No. 20-22 in those rankings, which I regard as absurdly amusing..

Most of these small, private schools simply cannot match the top public universities in terms of breadth of curriculum, quality and scope of facilities, depth of faculty, and a host of other criteria. NU is a very fine school, and I like it all the more because my niece is a young NU alum. But IMHO, it is far too small to compare with a number of top public schools, Michigan included.

I smok3d heefer at Seton's Hall- it was less violent than Step Brothers but we punked the playground kids even better- and Ohio State punched Jim Harbaugh out of a treehouse once again episode 34

He said sports. Last I checked, Cal has more national Championships than Michigan. I’m not saying they’re premier sports, but they’re sports nonetheless. Stanford, UCLA, and USC absolutely decimate Michigan in the athletics/academics balance comparison.

Agreed. From a business school perspective - Michigan is on par with all the other schools listed and ahead of several. Michigan is an elite school in my opinion. The only schools head and shoulders above Michigan academically are like MIT, Stanford, Harvard, etc.

screw their sports teams though!!!!!
