Really funny/cute interview with Spencer that Flo posted. Young girl interviewer says "You will be walking out in Carver Arena this Friday.....what are you most looking forward to? Spencer laughs and says..."Well....If I do walk out on Friday I'll be looking forward to the crowd reaction" Then he looks at his coach and laughs again...with a look that seems like an "Oh Well" The best part was the young lady.....she was so bubbly and smiling....and adorably oblivious to the fact that she may have just revealed something she wasn't supposed to. I guess we shall find out Friday if the young lady spilled the beans.

That was hilarious, and Spencer's reaction was awesome! I sure hope we see Spencer wrestle this year. I do not care what team he wrestles for, I am rooting for him to go undefeated and win NCAA's this year. He was my favorite HS kid to watch during his high school years. He went out there to dominate kids and put points on the board. Stay healthy.

There really was nothing quite like Spencer in high school The only weakness in my opinion with Lee is the amount of weight he has cut over the last five years. I watched him step on a scale as an 8th grader at 119lbs. He wrestled 110lbs at the Worlds last year. Lee is such a talented wrestler but by cutting so much weight over the last few years, I think it has hurt his overall strength. Do not get me wrong, Lee will probably excel in college but it is really hard to get physically stronger by cutting so much weight year after year.

I thought they would wait until the first or second match in January. I guess if they already know what they plan to do - do it.
If he is wrestling Friday, best of luck to him.

Maybe they are playing us;). Hope he goes. 125 is gonna be fun and hope We could watch him in finals.

Seems like a pretty quick turn around from the injury. Good for him, wishing him success (except against PSU) and interested to watch him compete at this level. 125 could shape up to be a real fun weight class in Cleveland!

As long as he's healthy enough as a wrestling fan, I'd love to see him go.

I would rank him just behind Suriano right out of the gate as a true freshman. Then a gap to NATO at #3.

Words to live by here: link it or it didnt happen

I'm certain that if he is wrestling Friday, and they didn't want it to get out that this video wouldn't have made it out of the room.

I understand that due to not having results, however if I needed to bet on someone to win it come March if wrestling I'm all in on Lee.

If I were the coaches at Iowa, I'd put Lee on the mat(if healthy) The lad has a history of getting injured and you gotta make hay while the sun shines.

I used to coach at the D2 level and we had the same attitude with academically risky wrestlers, wrestle the kid when eligible because he might not be around next year

its "TBD" like the wrestle offs ....hawks marketing dept is becoming P.T. Barnumesque.

Got to do everything you can when the effort on the mat isnt inspiring.

PS- I wonder if they removed the "best lite weight room in america" from the stationary after the IC Duals

Well he's obviously beating Gilman in the room, so...

I'll be happy to have a hawk to root for, for a change. I usually put on body paint of their opponents colors every week (and wear it to the PSU dual obviously).

Strategically, if I'm the coaches, he's strictly opens until Midlands. They don't need him for a meaningless one-off vs. JR Wert. They need him in March to beat at least 3 of Tomasello, Suriano, Cruz, Pitch, Lizak, Millhof, Russell, Schram, etc.

Reason: he hasn't wrestled yet at all. No opens, no duals. 0-0. If he's good to go, why hasn't he gone yet? If he hasn't been good to go, then why commit the full year to the Rider dual? This is basically the same mistake Jackson made last year with Colbray, except Colbray had no injury history.

(Humorous aside: Wrestlestat predicts Wert 10-0 MD over Lee. Obvious small sample size distortion, still funny.)

IMO the one and only reason to go vs. Rider is if Brands plans to wrestle him in 2 weeks at Rutgers. Build him up this week vs. Wert, next week vs. Piotrowski, then Suriano. Even then ... Suriano will be at Midlands too.

As a fan, I hope he goes -- it makes 125 even more insane. As a PSU fan, I hope he goes -- it makes Tomasello's life that much harder. Putting my head over my heart, he doesn't have to go now. Rider makes little sense.

lee's shrug to his coach at 0:31 was hilarious. i have no idea why no one said "cut! let's do it again, but without the massive reveal this time."

IMHO there is no way he wrestles on Friday. There is no reason/advantage to do so.

Agree, find it hard to believe that he is going this soon after multiple injuries that required surgery, especially against Rider.

Not saying he is going to wrestle on Friday, but this would be the best indicator for him and his coaches of where he stands with the elite at 125. There hasn't been an open yet that would give him the same feedback.

He's not going Friday. The girl asked him a good question for anyone who doesn't have in depth knowledge of Spencer Lees status. He said he was a freshman, she's aware that he's good because he's the main guy in the video. Oh, you're a freshman. You're gonna run out for the first time, what's it going to be like?

Spencer was just being polite not correcting her and gave a rather intelligent reply for being on the spot. Well if I run out" is a lot better than derailing the interview trying to explain that he still is in redshirt.

If he were going this Friday why would they sit on it? Gamesmanship vs. Rider??? Be a lot better for the program if they milked all the free FLO and company publicity they could get out of it.

Another good question for someone without in-depth knowledge would have been “have you ever given an illegal fist to the back?” Just trying to help. :)

I saw the interview the way Dice saw it, that he kind of got jammed and nevertheless gave a good answer to an interviewer who he didn't want to embarrass for not knowing much of anything about him, the team, and the redshirt situation.

Flo often gets unfairly accused of pushing clickbait, but this is clickbait. Does it make any sense whatsoever that a student reporter would be let in on that decision in advance? Because Nomad is implying exactly that--that she accidentally revealed inside info. C'mon.

I can't explain why he was at 119 in 8th grade but he didn't seem like a guy who cut much weight during the folkstyle season. Maybe 110 was tough near the end (remember night before weighins) of his junior year but he was smaller than everyone he wrestled at 126 his senior year.

Heck he is still small for 125, I mean look at him next to Perez in that video.

Just to be clear--I don't think Flo had anything to do with this video. I think that young lady is Iowa's version of Arielle--so in theory someone majoring in communications/marketing. I.e. someone that one day hopes to know what she is doing, but is undoubtedly guided by the program's/coaches' desired messaging. I think TnT are playing coy w/ their fans to build excitement--which will work if they eventually pull the shirt, but will fail if they go Tom Ryan, and pack the big arena to watch backups get pinned.

No, I get all that. My point is that Flo is framing the interviewer's innocent misunderstanding as having a meaning it clearly doesn't, because common sense dictates that the interviewer herself would have no idea whether Lee's shirt is going to be pulled on Friday. Occam's Razor explanation for Lee's reaction is that he wasn't anticipating the interviewer's misunderstanding.

Its funny to watch all the speculation and theories develop on Flo and here. BTW the young lady is Matt Vandenberg's wife. Starting WR for the football team. Good people!
She's the starting WR for the football team? Hmm. Who knew?

The PSU version of this "student produced" team content is very slick. Especially this year, as the students involved have gained experience.

While I don't know how Iowa treats their student com program, I can't imagine with Morningstar right there, a decision wasn't made to roll with the faux pas. But maybe they didn't consider our interpretation though.

I just like watching Spencer and want to right now.

you couldnt just report on the who?

Its just all show men, Lee will wrestle at Midlands unattached and then
they go from the results there. Same Alex M..
