SOUTH BEND, Ind. -- The NCAA has denied defensive lineman Ishaq Williams a waiver to play in the 2015 season, Notre Dame coach Brian Kelly said Thursday after practice.

Williams was suspended last August as part of the school's internal academic investigation and missed the entire 2014 season. He re-enrolled at Notre Dame this summer and will continue to stay on scholarship, but he will not count toward the limit of 85 that a school can award, Kelly said

With scholarships and expenses at such a premium how does he stay on scholarship yet not count toward the limit? He was suspended for a violation.

He can't practice with the team nor play any games yet he gets his scholarship? I guess kudos to him for continuing his education (but it's free so why not) and ND for continuing to foot the bill with no apparent benefit to them.

That is unusual and seems like a way to skirt the scholarship limits. It's totally different from a situation where a kid suffers a legitimate injury and can't play football again. ND can bring in another scholarship player while hiding Williams on the academic casualty list which apparently doesn't count against the limit. What happens if Williams is eligible next year? Will he suddenly count against the limit again? Maybe this has been going on for years but can player scholarship limits be manipulated by declaring a player academically ineligible when the school is still giving him a free ride?

This makes zero sense to me, but then again, anything to do with Ishaq Williams ever does!

I applaud ND for allowing him to stay in school even though he cant play. Its the NCAA the ruled he cant practice or play, so it makes sense he does not count against the 85. I think ND told him he had to do x,y & z to get back in, he did that, so they accepted him back. I still don't know why the NCAA ruled him ineligible, its not like he was out of year.

I kind of agree, he's getting money to continue his education at a very expensive place. Instead of sending him away to go to junior college or something, Notre Dame is saying, stay here and just buckle down and try to pass some classes.

I think it indicates they have hope that Ishaq can get his act together academically and earn a degree. He must have showed up with some academic deficits and needs some support but I doubt they would be doing this if he wasn't putting in the effort.

Yeah he might help the football team someday but that is a long way off. I kind of like that Notre Dame is handling it this way. A lot of schools would just replace the kid with the latest HS AA linebacker and abandon Ishaq.
