It's a slow tv night, so I'm watching a re-run of THE Six Million Dollar Man...

A local station plays it on the weekends, so I've been dvr'ing it. William Shatner is guest starring. He's playing an astronaut who has an accident in space and can talk to dolphins. He wants to send one up to space. Lee Majors' stoic acting style juxtaposed with Shatner's brilliant method, along with the daring story line has generated some truly compelling television. For those interested its season 1, episode 17 "Burning Bright."

As kids we had $6mil Man lunch cans, stickers, trading cards. Hell, some of us thought we WERE the Six Million Dollar Man. My friends at recess would be slow-motion chasing each other around making the sound effect...."Dadadadadada....dadadadada..."

Countless arguments ensued concerning what the SMDM could and could not do!

I know what you mean. In a previous episode, Colonel Austin pole vaulted over a 30 foot high electrified fence in order to infiltrate a laser weapon compound operated by Steve Forrest's character, he of the infamous "a weapon unused is a useless weapon" quote from the 1985 comedy classic, Spies Like Us. As I'm watching this display of vertical ascendancy, all I could think of was why he didn't just jump over it.

My favorite show growing up as a kid. I even have the first 3 seasons on DVD.

A couple random thoughts on the series:

1. The first 3 seasons were by far the best. I found the sound effects became overkill and almost annoying in seasons 4 & 5, plus the plots got much weaker.

2. The soundtrack by Oliver Nelson only lasted these seasons before his passing. His music was terrific.

3. Was never a fan of all the Bionic Woman episodes. Austin had a great thing going, no need to get him involved in a sappy love story.

Any fan of the series has to remember this. After 3 made for TV movies this was the original pilot.

Here are some other good ones. The pole vault over the 30ft fence when he could have jumped. The infused strong man Mike Farrell returning from space. Who can forget Lee's lovely wife Farrah Fawcett?

Oscar Goldman was a real prick in the early episodes. However, Darren McGavin's character in the original pilot was an even bigger prick.

Oscar was all over the bionic woman in those early episodes.

Farrah Fawcett played an astronaut in her 1st episode in season 1.

Lee Majors was a badass who did practically all of his stunts, some of which were quite impressive.

Oh, I know. Have the first three seasons pretty much memorized. Aside from his wife, there were many beautiful women featured on the show. Pamela Franklin, Donna Mills, and Elke Summer to name a few. Always liked Laurette Spang in the second episode of season one, "Survivor of the Fittest".
