the movie is about a girl named Aiyna from Tuba City Arizona who grew up poor in a broken family. At 18, she moves to LA but can't get a good job other than a fast food job. The lack of money leads her to unhealthy lifestyles and questionable friends who share her struggles. What she has going for her is that she is kind of hot being half Arapaho and half German. She likes to wear cowboy boots, turquoise jewelry and black sleeveless Tees.
Cut away to Jason who grew up in LA to wealthy parents who divorced when he was young. He went to Malibu High School and got into drugs and nefarious friends who abused drugs and robbed people for fun. This is partly due to an absent and abusive father and a mom who was stung out on various prescription narcotics she gets to combat her different levels of neurosis.
Jason and Aiyna meet and hit it off as Aiyna is forced to take a job as a dancer at Spearmint Rhino to make ends meet. She finds that Jason is a good kid but grew up in a tough situation, as she did. They party too much and get sideways with the cops in a routine traffic stop where a friend in the backseat has some meth and Jason resists and goes to the hoosegow. Dad and mom refuse to support him so Aiyna steps up to help him by increasing her dancing hours. This makes Jason happy and angry that she's paling around with strip club dudes. This is the middle of the movie with various rising and lowering actions....but lots of sex to keep it interesting.
They have a big fight as some dude sexually assaults her just before Jason's trial. Jason beats him up and gets arrested, again, which is horrible timing. Just as the shit is hitting the fan, they know that Aiyna is a big Luke fan and Jason's mom loves Tracy Chapman. They see the two of them performing "fast car" and realize that they are the same. One from the city and born into wealth the other from the country and born into poverty. Both fight their families, govts, and inflation while trying to grow up and into an adult relationship.
Jason's Dad has a fast car. Jason maneuvers to trick his dad out of his fast car. Jason and Aiya drive out of LA in their fast car like Tippi Hedron and Rod Taylor at the end of the movie "The Birds" while the duo version of "Fast Car" plays on the radio.
The car represents deliverance. The birds represent the various challenging issues: moms, dads, police, business owners, costs, illegal drugs, legal drugs, etc. etc. etc.
