J.B. Nelson to start at guard

It seems like football has traditionally gone with the starter or bust, where hoops has ended up being about playing time and situational substitutions. The minutes played and time in crunch time matters more than "starter."

Football has had "change if pace" rbs, nickel defenders, and other specialist packages (dare I say Lion)...but for our dbs hopefully everyone can find the time to play at their peak given some breathers now and then.

I get that the O line looks for continuity, but maybe we could steategically sub there too on order to capitalize on our depth? We've got plenty of bodies. Somewhere the ghost of Derek Dowrey is restless...

Credit to our staff....we have come an extremely long way in 10 years. Looking forward to seeing how this all plays out!

It might be noted on that Tengwall, actually, was never a true starter: he was co listed with Nourzad and shared time every game, up until his injury last season. It should also be noted that Nelson has nothing in common with past o line links to Lackawanna: the staff is incredibly high on him, and he was going to share the spot with Tengwall even IF Tengwall was healthy.

The job is to get the best five on the field. These are the best five. They are not the same five people thought last April, but that's not the job of the staff. Best five. Walton is one of them.

How deep is this safety room? A team captain in Ellis, may not start...hearing Reed and Winston, although all 4 will play...

Very. I'm not sure we quite have a peak Brisker/Tig type of guy, but I think we have guys who are ahead of them at this point in their careers.

If one or 2 of these guys do break out as such, this will be a dangerous group.

Watch for Mack to see snaps also.

But if they are all relatively close, is a game tired player still the best? I never played football- was a hoops guy. But our depth is something thatvwe haven't really had of late. If we have a '94 like line who can play all game, great. But sort of like the kicker position, being one of the Top 5 might not last until the 2nd Qtr if the WVU game if someone falters. Definitely a good pr9blem to have.

The good news is Tengwall has more time to get healthy while Nelson holds down the spot. There is no down side here

Not sure you're giving Tengwall enough credit. He started 5 games, and then missed the rest of the season due to injury. Per gopsusports.com, Named the coaching staff's Offensive Player of the Game (Auburn, 9/17).

I recall from watching that Auburn game how active Tengwall was in pulling and moving. Led sweeps several times that were very effective in getting to the second level (recall that was a big game for Singleton because he had room to run).

Obviously, if he can't get healthy or stay healthy, others will take his playing time and can be very productive. I look at Nelson and Ioane as being mostly inside, straight ahead blockers. Would seem to favor Kaytron's style.

Does anyone know what Tengwall is dealing with? Is it a minor lingering issue, season ending, or academic/discipline?

I think fully healthy, Tengwall is the superior player. That said, it's really great to hear Nelson has been so impressive and is not much of a dropoff at all. Good news is that the schedule and Nelson's talent allows for Tengwall to take his time getting healthy before coming back. No need to rush.

Been rumors of a concussion, but nobody has said for certain.
Thanks for the heads up. Makes sense if true. Process could be, look, kid is ready to play, reps aren't entirely necessary early on, clear all concussion protocols and make sure no residuals before he comes back. Start Nelson vs WVU and only bring Tengwall back when Big10 sched starts.

Agree 100%.

Extra month in the weight room. Get his strength up before he returns. Take advantage of the depth.
