James Franklin, the Mark Richt of the B1G? Discuss

BTW, God speed to Coach Richt as he fights his health battle.

I thought this exact thing an hour after the game.

Too nice. Too happy go lucky without the Pete Carroll 1v1, every job is up for grabs every practice mentality. No NFL experience to mold us in a tougher image.

No recruiting violations either. Oh well. Today sucked.

Forget football. Remember Vanderbilt? Character issues.

Covfefe and NTTSM!
I've been a donor a long time, and I've heard this more than once. I think you're an Iowa fan? Kirk Ferentz doesn't make comment like he made unless there is some history. So now we both have a shit season, and maybe we get a new beginning. I think you're stuck with Kirk.

I don't know about all the inside stuff, but it might not matter for PSU next season anyway, so who cares?

For the praise Smart gets for takingUGA to the next level after Richt, he’s still never won the sec, or beaten Alabama (0-4). Or made the playoff in a season where he played Alabama in the regular season. I’d argue James Franklin is Kirby Smart if Kirby Smart was in the SEC west instead of the east. Drop Penn State in the big ten west and conveniently setup the schedule to avoid Michigan and osu over 90% of the time like uga does LSU and bama and the results probably look very similar.
The SEC has better pr

Touché. Typing too fast it was tied into my next point. He’s never won the sec in a season where he played Alabama, and they ultimately lost to bama two games later, so they likely don’t win it in 17 if not for the auburn upset of Alabama.

Georgia’s successes under smart to date have all come under the convenient circumstances of avoiding the big dog in their conference. Take osu off the schedule in 17/18/19 and one of those years is likely a playoff.

They’ll probably make it this year regardless.

I didn’t know Franklins only two seasons were the two most recent. 16/17/18/19 he was 11-1
True enough.
Still, the type of in game mistakes that have an effect on that ability to make it thru a mine field whether playing the tough division or weak one, keeps rearing its head. Mark Richt might well be a good comparison, but he did make the Invitational.

but you are also right, the SEC had a better PR machine. One that had them being eye-tested to a two game invitational every year, and in one case 2 teams in that game. Funny how none of the other conferences objected to that travesty. Like the MLB claiming world champs but don’t play the champs from other parts of the world.

now it’s a 4 team Invitational of teams they want in the tournament.

Rolleaux has some promise, even at the prime goofy time of7 he was extra medium midnight chocolate bunny snatcher. Still more of a Guard- it's not that he's too short for either Tackle spot but you dont want a guy who cant figure out if he's from Philly or Lebanon let alone what hood he from having to do all that- too all-slow hob goblin feet 4 that job.

I don't buy the comparison to Mark Richt. I think he is more like a poor man's Les Miles than anyone. He inherited a great situation at LSU and rode a bunch of Nick Saban recruits to a BCS title which he backed his way into it with a combination of SEC media bias and a bad WVU loss to Pitt. He recruited very well but could really never get over the hump against Bama. Combine that with key misses on the recruiting trail, a general lack of player development and player turnover led to him getting fired.

That history compares favorably to Franklin. He inherited a situation that way way better than almost everyone will admit. The talent on hand was excellent. His best recruiting classes (based on impact) were his lowest rated but were dominated by O'Brien recruits including Chris Godwin, Saquan Barkley, Mike Gesicki, Marcus Allen, the Cothra/ers and John Reid amongst many others. He used the base left behind by O'Brien to back into his lone title. Hasn't been able to get over the OSU hump. He has a string of high profile recruiting misses at critical positions. Player development has been a frequent issue.

What year did Richt "make the invitational"?

A lot of you guys don't pay much attention to college football.

The rape allegations at Vanderbilt were the first hint. Him coaching players to fake injuries against Iowa was conclusive evidence. I'm not sure why everyone argued against the latter, when it was obvious.

He wishes he were on Richt's level. Richt was a great coach until health issues attacked his family and then football and coaching become secondary to him. Not been a better man than Richt to walk the sidelines of a P5 football program. Richt never tried to pull any UGA kids with him to Miami when he was fired, unlike Franklin who tried to convince Vandy commits to follow him. That was probably cool with PSU fans, but when he is or if he gets fired it probably won't be quite as cool when he tries to take PSU commits with him and now with the free transfer veteran players.

Mark Richt had a few legit national title contenders.

James Franklin hasn't sniffed that.

James Franklin is no Mark Richt.
