MUSC, Darkness to Light to screen film about Penn State sex abuse scandal

The son of the late Penn State football coach Joe Paterno will speak on a panel about the Jerry Sandusky sex abuse scandal on Thursday at the Medical University of South Carolina.

The event, which is free and open to the public, will be co-hosted by Darkness to Light, a Charleston nonprofit group that trains adults to prevent child sexual abuse.

Jay Paterno and other experts, including former U.S. Surgeon General Dr. Regina Benjamin, will discuss the case and its impact on the Penn State community following the screening of "Happy Valley," a documentary about the sex abuse scandal.

In 2012, former Penn State assistant football coach Jerry Sandusky was found guilty on dozens of counts of child sexual abuse. His arrest and trial forced the university to oust several top school officials, including longtime head football coach Joe Paterno, for their alleged attempts to cover up the threat Sandusky posed to children.

"Incidents such as these demonstrate the need for child sexual abuse prevention to be included in national strategy," said Lyndon Haviland, interim CEO of Darkness to Light. "MUSC is an unequivocal leader in children's health, and we are thrilled to partner with them to bring this discussion to the Charleston community."

The event will begin at 6 p.m. in the Drug Discovery Auditorium at MUSC.

Good to hear. I'm glad he is participating.

I'm curious if anyone who actually works at Penn State is on the speaking trail and trying to educate people about sexual abuse/pedophilia? Or are we just complying with phony Freeh recommendations?

Wonder if they'll make comparisons to the Citadel sex abuse scandal?!

Similar events although people down here are adamant they didn't "cover" anything up like JVP... Plus they didn't hire Freeh to do their "independent" investigation!! Gonna try to make it... Go Jay!!

Ropa, question

Wasn't there a SC pedophile case in which the person was a member of an organization that received a grant from Darkness to Light? The pedophile was a missionary I think.

Not sure, Apex.

But the Citadel sex abuse scandal, although they won't admit it, is very similar to what happened in Happy Valley... Which implies more of an "overlooked" grooming process than a direct "coverup" of known events! I hope someone mentions this... Freeh was wrong when he "guessed" the latter!

Re: Ropa, question

Apex,
You might be thinking of Alexander Park. He was a youth leader Mt. Nittany United Methodist Church. Google sent a tip to NCMEC about suspected CP on Park's gmail. Park was set for a preliminary hearing Aug 6, 2014. I haven't heard anything about it since these articles:

It's also worth checking out the linked Twitter thread. It appears that Park was a "lunch lady" at the elementary school next to Sandusky's house.

Re: Ropa, question

Disturbing. That wasn't the guy I was thinking of but it goes to show you that you have to watch who is around our kids.

The story I'm thinking of is about a guy in South Carolina that did a lot of missionary work with his wife. They found all kinds of stuff in his house that indicated he was a pedophile for something like 50 years. I think he killed himself. He had worked for an organization that received a grant from the organization that is hosting Jay. That organization is focused on sex abuse prevention education and detection really. I remember reading the story and thinking man, even the people funding an effort to stamp out pedophilia funded a pedophile by accident.
