Jeff Byers On The Mat

Great feature on the absolute best in the business. Serious question...how did he come by the nickname “Ironhead”?

I lived next door to Ironhead at Penn State one year. I can't say for sure, but I always thought he went by Ironhead because he head-butted us all the time. And yes, he was as much fun as you might expect. A great guy and friend.

Thanks Roar for posting this..Man it be great to have him and Mark Ironside side by side doing the dual lol both are just great at getting in the matches and create excitement for the followers.

Didn't Ironside get mad at Byers for being too loud during a dual a few yeas ago. I think it was when DT tech falled Moore in the first period, lol.

Yes, he complained to Jeff that he was being too loud. Jeff just laughed it off like "What am I supposed to do, man?"

Wow- great video. We are blessed with THE BEST announcers for our great Penn St sports with Byers, Jones, Ham. Some of their calls are indelibly etched into my memory of special Penn St moments. I am sure it is the same for many of you. Videos of key highlights with their broadcast calls truly elicits an emotional response from within.

Once again, everybody knows without bothering to click the link that Jammen is quoting himself.

Who quotes themselves anyway?

When he was trying out for the football team a kid on same floor who didn’t really know football but had heard of ironhead Haywood gave it to him

For someone to post what was posted above (not quoting it here), is shameful, and beneath the average person's dignity. Jeff doesn't need my defending him here or anywhere. All that needs said, from one extreme to another (rocket scientist to a certain Minny fan), anyone can do research and see Jeff's character, which has nothing to do with his announcing skills.

These “On The Mat” features are done pretty well. I watched the one about Harley Kessler, and I was able to see a side of Tyler Berger that I did not know.

Actually, I didn't post that thread and there are 97 other replies, including Jefe. In case you've forgotten:

Jammen " His nonstop tirade against the officials turned him into a parody of announcing." "I have no problem with Byer's homerism and he is quite good at describing the action. It was his incessant berating the refs that put me off, even as it became comical."

SetonHallPirate talking about referee Sorochinsky "...there's a reason you think he's quite good...he is! There's a reason he's regularly chosen to officiate at Nationals."

Flo's Spey " is it possible to think the guy sucks without having a PSU axe to grind?"

LOL . . . citing a January 2015 message thread to support an argument that most folks don't like Ironhead. I don't know what aspect of that is more ridiculous -- thinking that the opinions of the tiny handful of posters on that thread constitutes some sort of legitimate data base; thinking that it is unusual that opposing teams' fans don't appreciate any other team's announcer; or thinking that we care even a little bit.
