Jenner's 'people' pitched him/her winning award to ESPN

as a PR stunt and ESPN executives loved the idea.

Who knows if it's true but it wouldn't surprise me in the least.

The extremes demonstrated by going from someone as real as Devon to 'that'....no words really.

Not shocking. That family is completely about selling themselves for money.....and I think he has a new reality show on himself starting soon. Saw an article the other day that said they apparently pay rags like TMZ and radar online to write articles about them each day to keep them 'relevant'. Never really read those sites but was curious and looked- and sure enough there's like 4-6 articles about them on the first page all the time.

It is bizarre to see this as the headline on espn.go.com right now:

Jenner: Trans people deserve your respect

How's that for sports news?

(And, no, I have nothing against transgender people.)

Wow, the Open tees off in a couple hours and that's the headline? Thankfully ESPN won't be broadcasting this championship much longer.

I have nothing against transgender people but here is my issue with Jenner. In one breathe, he says transgender people have courage. But then he also says people should have courage to be themselves. Was he not a man? I am sorry...but I just don't understand it.
What are we supposed to teach our kids? Be yourselves until you have millions to change yourselves. Should we teach a small child or even teenager...okay, you are born a woman but you think you are really a man. It is a concept I am having a hard time grasping.

This makes complete sense, really. Jenner issues have nothing to do with athletics. The others nominated are using their platform in athletics for their cause. This smells of manipulation. Its a reach.

Relative to Jenner, she can change herself into a dog for all I care. Its her personal business and I respect that. There is something about this mess that makes me feel that the public is being used.

I didn't watch the Espys but have read some articles about it this morning. It does seem like it was a big PR stunt organized by Disney and Jenner's people. The award wasn't given based on the voting results of a well informed panel of judges. Instead, a producer at ESPN apparently thought it sounded like a good idea and discussed it with some of her staff who of course didn't disagree. The producer then decided to make it official.

So Jenner takes the stage and instead of displaying some humility he proceeds to lecture everyone about acceptance. No doubt he was speaking with his upcoming television show on his mind. Gotta pump up those ratings!! That's what it's all about!!

At least Devon Still is a current player and was supported in his cause by his current team. Leah's illness became an NFL topic this past season. No question that Devon Still used his status as an NFL player as a platform for Leah's cause (and for those less fortunate), but at least he is a current athlete.

I didn't watch the espys last night, but I assume they still had awards for achievements on the field, court, etc.

30 years ago he/she would have been "courageous." Doing this now, after all his reality show BS with the Kardasians, it's an obvious money grab.

I'm completely with you. I'm all for people doing whatever they want with themselves, but to act like you're a freaking hero.. give me a freaking break. I would hope this clown has zero influence on any young person. This act of his has little to do with courage and a lot to do with a personality disorder. Find a shrink and try to come to grips with yourself. That would be more courageous.

I said the same thing. If everybody's reaction to it is "How courageous" then it's not courageous. It's courageous f you get a lot of negative reaction but still have the nerve to do it, not if everybody pats you on the back.
