Motivating kids is easy. Just threaten that if they don't help out around the house, you will send them to Pitt.

I never insulted Pitt - only you. Because you deserved it. Face it - they own you. They are in your head all the time, and that gets reflected by your number of posts you make about them - on a Penn State board.
There is no irony in my comment, only observational analysis - from this and the myriad of other posts you make about Pitt. Perhaps you should change your board name to Pittczar.

I merely suggested sending kids to Pitt as punishment... maybe it's too far away, maybe it's too small, maybe it's too urban, maybe it doesn't have the right field of study, and most importantly it's not Penn State. Just because it's not the right fit, doesn't make it an insult. Maybe it's where you plan to send your kids... but this is a Penn State board, and you would likely be in the minority.

In all the years spent raising my two daughters, this is the only form of "punishment" that had any real impact. Car privileges, grounding, friend privileges ... pppfffffttttt ... but I swear they would rather cut of their own arm then give up their cell phone. My younger daughter threw the mother of all fits the first time we took her phone away.
This was entertaining. I really like the part where you tried to describe how you didn't mean your previous comment about going to Pitt as an insult. Good stuff. Now if you believe what you actually wrote that makes it even better.
Heck, I wouldn't even allow them to be kids at all. They should spend their days laying bricks and rolling tobacco.
I dare say the kids who aren't ready for the real world aren't in that position because their parents failed to create a microcosm of the real world in their house as children.
True story, unfortunately I missed actually hearing it. About 20 years ago, while I was packing our car to return from a vacation in the outer banks, my wife walked my about 5 year old son to the beach. It was right before school started and my wife was giving a "if you work hard you can do anything" speech. After she finished the speech, he turned to her and said:
"If I don't work hard in school, does that mean I have to go to Pitt?"
They still occasionally got in trouble, but I'd like to think the fear of losing the cell phone reduced the number of occurrences. For teenagers (especially girls), there are actually six vital organs ... brain, heart, lungs, kidneys, liver and cell phone!
