Joel Myers calls Senator Yudichak's bill a power grab?

Just saw a letter to the editor from Joel Myers that raised my temperature a few degrees in our 90+ degree heat wave here in OH. Myers sat in an Alumni elected Trustee seat for about 27 years. During that time he had enjoyed a lucrative deal with PSU for his weather forecasting business, and recently signed a big deal with Verizon ( hmmm, is there a new B & I Trustee who is a Verizon contact?) Joel is acting out against Senator Yudichak because his proposed bill will remove the long entrenched power of EMERITUS Trustees, level the playing ground for ALUMNI ELECTED Trustees and cut the BOT down in size. In addition, the voters in PA can vote OUT any governor, senator or congressperson whenever they see the need, and we alumni can vote out/replace our Trustees - just like we did to MR Myers. What needs to be under SOMEbody's control by vote are the Business and Industry and AG Trustees who have done so much damage to our alma mater (some of them are not even PSU grads.) There seems to be someone orchestrating a grass roots effort by Old Guard corrupt Trustees to squash Sen. Y's bill via media firestorm. Even if we do not live in PA, we likely have family or friends there who can write letters to their local editor, call their local state reps and urge Senator Y's bill get a fair test. Hopefully some of you saw the media item that the Highest PAID University Presidents at public schools over the past years have Rodney Erickson at the top. I think the State has a right to step in.

How did Myers explain his $50K/yr sweetheart, not vote contract after we ousted him? Myers remaining cronies need to go. He has nothing to add that is of any worth.

The Legislature needs to seize control, even if it is direct control. To hell with Masser and his thieves.
I agree! Even though I hate government interference in most cases, it is our ONLY way to remove the corruption in the BOT. After all - you can't spell Penn State or Pennsylvania State University without the state.

The level of hypocrisy in the old line members of the Board has reached unprecedented levels. I am generally opposed to Harrisburg's involvement in anything because they typically make bad problems worse, and are the biggest hypocrites of all, but I certainly agree that in this case, we have no choice. If the politicians do not step in, and soon, this cabal will continue, unchecked, and there will not be a damn thing we can do about it.

If you're not quite hot enough under the collar already, take a guess at who is coordinating this propaganda effort (hint: the cabal isn't coordinating it themselves).

Now take a guess at how much Penn State is paying for that PR consultation.

Pretty laughable stuff, and nothing but clear "rhetoric", considering Joel "The Hypocrite" Myers level of education. I think Joel needs to go back and read the Founding Charter of The Pennsylvania State University, because the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania via the Pennsylvania State Legislature has always held "the power" (and ownership for that matter) of PSU. So the State is not exercising a "power grab", they are simply choosing to exercise "power" and "authority" they have ALWAYS held. 'Ole Joel either doesn't understand the meaning of the term "power grab" or he is just being obtuse for demagoguery reasons (my guess would be the latter), but if anybody has exercised a "power grab" over the years, and not just a "power grab" but an illicit "power grab", it is the corrupt and hypocritical powerful Trustees that have populated the Executive Committee of the BOT.

Write a letter to the CDT and remind Myers that he was fired for cause, and that he is no longer welcome in the Penn State community. I will write something myself in early July (a month after I sent the last one).

Got banned for that

An excellent point. Joel may have been out in the Weather too long to think rationally.

Folks need to understand how people of pedigree are supposed to, I'm sorry, entitled to act. Listen to jim carnes, aka cr66. He'll tell you all about it.

Just saw a letter to the editor from Joel Myers that raised my temperature a few degrees in our 90+ degree heat wave here in OH. Myers sat in an Alumni elected Trustee seat for about 27 years. Just curious but how many alumni trustee elections have you voted in since graduation? Be honest! During that time he had enjoyed a lucrative deal with PSU for his weather forecasting business, and recently signed a big deal with Verizon ( hmmm, is there a new B & I Trustee who is a Verizon contact?) So what. Joel no longer sits on the Board so what is your point? Joel Myers is pre-eminent in his field. Accordingly he had many lucrative deals including many outside of PSU. JVP had lucrative business deals some former trustees and/or their friends too? Care to comment on those? Joel is acting out against Senator Yudichak because his proposed bill will remove the long entrenched power of EMERITUS Trustees, level the playing ground for ALUMNI ELECTED Trustees and cut the BOT down in size. Perhaps you should re-read Joel's letter which I have included below in which he clearly articulates his reason for opposing the bill and it's not what you said. In addition, the voters in PA can vote OUT any governor, senator or congressperson whenever they see the need, and we alumni can vote out/replace our Trustees - just like we did to MR Myers. What needs to be under SOMEbody's control by vote are the Business and Industry and AG Trustees who have done so much damage to our alma mater (some of them are not even PSU grads.) And here I thought it was Jerry, Graham, Tim and Gary who did the damage. Silly me. There seems to be someone orchestrating a grass roots effort by Old Guard corrupt Trustees to squash Sen. Y's bill via media firestorm. Corrupt trustees? Please stop with the theories and idle speculations and produce the evidence. It's unsubstantiated reckless charges like yours that reinforce the notion that alumni should never be allowed to be Board members. Don't think so. Gordon Gee was paid $6M in 2013 by tOSU. I think the State has a right to step in.

"State Sen. John Yudichak’s purpose in introducing legislation to restructure the Penn State board of trustees should be obvious to everyone.

It is intended to give the General Assembly much more control over the university without supplying any more money.

Such a move might harm the university and ultimately the value and quality of education it provides in many ways by interjecting politics and legislators onto the board.

Importantly, one might ask why he has targeted Penn State but not Pitt, Temple and Lincoln, the other state-related universities, which actually get more dollars per student from the state than Penn State.

JOEL MYERS"

Why? Because Penn State is a PUBLIC university (as much as Karen Peetz wanted to change that) and it is currently under the control of an unfathomably incompetent Board of Trustees.
