jon gruden, ten years for $100m.

Does anyone think that with the cuts at ESPN, it might have been "suggested" to Gruden that it's a good time for him to consider a return to coaching?

I don't know, I just know that I don't have to listen to him anymore on Monday night FB or (Sunday night) if I ever watch the NFL again. His grimmacing and cliches were pretty annoying.

How good a coach is he really? It's been a long time. He won a Super Bowl with the Raiders, but what happened when he was with Tampa Bay?

Kind of glad he is leaving announcing cause his schtick is old and annoying and sucks and.....

If Beth Mowins does Monday Night Football I will never watch it again. I am not against women commentators, just her. Got sick of her doing other sports I liked to watch.

I think Gruden is brilliant.

He's spent the last nine (?) years or so keeping in the limelight and apparently convincing large numbers of fans (and owners) that he's the smartest guy in any room. He leveraged that into a great paying job at ESPN, and now that he's played that game out for about as long as he possibly could, he's going to take a huge payday with the Raiders.

All he's got at risk is his rep, and he'll be ready to retire by the time this contract runs out anyway..

Those are significant dollars, assuming it's a guaranteed contract. I wonder what coaches like Bill Belichick earn per year?

With the way things are going at ESPN, I wouldn't be stunned if they "helped put in a good word" for Gruden.

Gruden is the only one at ESPB, other than Blackledge, that makes any sense. Can't see them wanting him gone....

Other way around. He coached the Raiders, then was lucky enough to face them in the Super Bowl. Like having the answer key to study for a math test.

Well that means he doesn't fit their model;). I just kind of compare it to a team that has one high priced superstar, but is no longer competitive. Eventually, they tank everything and rebuild. "Trust the process".

So why is there not a social outcry on ESPIN for Raiders circumventing the Rooney Rule?

They already contacted the league office who said the Raiders did indeed fulfill their obligation with the rule. True or not the league is defending them

Funny, when other teams have openings, you hear of everyone who interviewed.

I think the theory that this is a mutual ESPN cut has some weight.

Something stinks in Denmark!

Gruden makes a reported $6.5 million to talk footbal Monday nights on ESPN.
Does he really? Then why the hell is he going to the nfl .money money money. Don’t know if it is for the love of coaching

"Street & Smith’s Sports Business Journal reported in January 2012 that of hundreds of on-air broadcasters, the four highest paid -- Bob Costas and Al Michaels at NBC, Joe Buck at Fox and Jim Nantz at CBS -- earned about $5 million per year."

Networks Work
"Network broadcasters earn the most. At about $3 million per year, Chris Berman and Mike Tirico at ESPN come after the four highest-paid sports announcers cited previously, according to Street & Smith’s Sports Business Journal."
