I was thrilled how Josh wrestled at NCAA's, especially after his injury at B10's. Thank you Dan Monthley...we are so grateful to have you!

After watching the 3rd period of the finals, I was convinced that the well-conditioned midseason Josh Barr would have taken Buchanan apart in that last 2 minutes...and I can't help but wonder if the two weeks of necessary rehab (with probably much less mat time) leading up to NCAA's cost Josh his considerable gas tank advantage.

When I saw Buchanan sucking wind and barely moving in the 3rd, I was expecting Josh to pull a Posnansky style barrage on him. Problem was, Josh was almost as tired as SB and couldn't take advantage.

Just my uneducated $.02.

Feel free to tear this theory apart. BRING IT! (my new favorite motto)

I said the same thing at the end of the match. Not sure if it would have made the final difference, since going in I thought the first takedown wins it but it definitely didn't help his cause at the end.

Nah. Your post sucks! Lol. I'm in full agreement. Josh just wasn't his monster self in the finals. A lot of youth involved regarding the way he wrestled as well. 1st timer 2nd place is beyond amazing!

Barr empties the tank for sure...
I'm not sure how much he was able to do between Bigs and Nationals, but I don't know what any of them can do in that short amount of time.

Agree with all this but Buchanan is just so long. Hard to dig out of desperate straight away double legs on the longer guys in the 3rd. And just no go behinds available except the one Barr gave up himself.

Buchanan looked the same at the end of almost every match all season. Yet, he only lost once so conditioning wasn't an issue for him. Barr will be a title favorite next year for sure.
I second this, Buchanan always looked gassed but never actually gassed. In Barr v. Buchanan 1 if anyone gassed in the third it was Barr

Could be my imagination, but Buchanan looked much worse in this match than the dual...and Barr gassed in the dual because of his efforts to escape when SB rode him. That was not the situation this time.

Like I said...I could be completely off base.

I have no idea how intense any of his workouts were post Bigs, but I am sure somewhere along the way he was riding a bike, maybe soft jogs a nd of course a dodgeball game or two.

Their conditioning is taken care of through February. As long as he was somewhat active any lung efficiency he may have lost was miniscule.

Buchanan has always had a great tank dating back to his Wyoming days. Josh won’t be able to beat everyone just on gas tank alone. Had an unbelievable freshman season. Now needs to improve his hand fight and get in deep on attacks that aren’t from space.

I thought Josh was actually looking tired in the 2nd. Adrenaline dump maybe...

I am really looking forward to him being a big, really strong 197 pounder with a little more man strength. Other than Ferrari I expect Josh to treat other 197 pounders the same way he treats a really good and talented Mike Beard.

It will be interesting how things shake out at 184 and 197. Ryder 184 and Josh 197 or Josh dropping back to 184 and Connor Marisola at 197. Three National Championship caliber kids and only 2 weights. Other worldly problems.

I had written this in another thread: On that TD Buchanan tapped Josh's head and changed levels, causing Josh to go to both knees in reaction. Josh stayed on his knees a moment too long and Buchanan made him pay for it. If not for that mistake by Josh, the score is still probably 2-0 going into the third period. That third period would have been very interesting since Buchanan would have ultimately needed a TD or a turn to get the win. Buchanan probably would have ridden Josh for a few seconds to get to a minute+ of riding time and then released him. Josh would also have been less tired in the third period since he would not have been ridden by Buchanan so hard. Whether a fresher Josh could have held off Buchanan in the third we'll never know. P.S., It is interesting that as freshmen Josh and Levi respectively faced fifth and sixth year seniors. That is a tall task for a freshman.

Good observation! That would have been an interesting 3rd period if Buchanan would have had to come after Josh.

Props to Buchanan…he got it done and seems like a nice kid. Congratulations Josh…great NCAA debut!

Looking forward to the future!

I thought Josh and Levi both lost to wrestlers who were just a little bit better than them (Hamiti's defense, obviously, is no joke - plus he, like Buchanan, was probably bigger and definitely longer than Levi)
