A senior judge known for his work — and ultimate recusal — on the Jerry Sandusky case has been appointed to oversee the planned redactions to a controversial grand jury report outlining decades of child sex abuse by Catholic clergy across the state.

The state Supreme Court, in a two-sentence order Monday, appointed Judge John M. Cleland of McKean County to serve as a special master in the clergy abuse case. The court offered no insight into how it selected the Judge Cleland.

As special master, Judge Cleland will preside over any legal disputes regarding redactions to the more-than-800-page report documenting sexual abuse and cover-ups in six Catholic dioceses across the state. It is expected to be released next month.

The report’s release has been the subject of intense legal wrangling in recent weeks, much of it under seal. Attorneys for roughly two dozen current and former clergy members have asked the high court to block the release of portions of the report pertaining to them, saying that the sections are inaccurate or unfairly tarnish their clients’ reputations.

Just when you think the Catholic Church sex / abuse scandals can’t get any worse, they do.
I have had it with the Church leadership. The only thing that explains the usual tepid rationalizations in response to this ever growing heresy is complicity.
In a free nation, we at least have the opportunity to throw the bums in the government out. No so with the Church of Rome. We need an institutional exorcism.

Very disheartening. I'm not a big fan of the current Pope but it does look like he intends to get these guys out.

Really? I don’t see much evidence of the will to face up to this.
I read McCarrick ( Uncle Ted ) was one of Francis’ advisors when it came to appointing Cardinals.
I’m sure that won’t help.

McCarrick has been forced to resign and is no longer a cardinal and he's not allowed any public ministry, with more actions to come, although I don't know if that includes civil trial.

The pope also demanded and received resignations from *all* church leadership in Chile due to that coverup. 33 bishops and up; I haven't read how many were accepted, that's supposed to be a case-by-case basis.

So something is happening, not sure how much good it will do.

The Chile situation, from what I have read, was very badly bungled by Francis. There was a lot of public protest after his initial response, or lack of response. Since then, it seems like the Vatican is “ recalibrating “ it’s plan.
FWIW, I think what happened in Chile was maybe something of a blueprint. The laity will have to solve this crisis, and it won’t be solved by people quietly leaving the Church.
