it seems that i recall listening to PSU football on KDKA radio in the late 1960's - 1970's. i think we had an old BWI paper from 1980 that showed KDKA as a radio voice of PSU FB.

do any of you recall if KDKA was indeed broadasting PSU FB??? if so, why did they stop since we have such a strong national product and enormous listeners in the region. maybe i have this wrong, but KDKA seems like the station.

4 1/2 months ago you started basically the same thread (CLICK HERE). That's kind of unusual.

Did BWI exist in 1980?

Thought I'd seen this before. Just didn't realize it was the same individual. Wonder what the agenda is.

no agenda, just curious what happened. we were talking about this this weekend, and so just resent to see if some other points. i can say that i used to be able to pick up KDKA from several hundred miles away at night. it seems like KDKA would kill to have PSU FB. they might even want PSU Hockey!!

yes BWI was CLF before, and i think late 70's is when Phil founded it. i was among the early subscribers and never stopped. i have saved papers with Curt Warner-Todd Blackledge team.

KDKA-FM is actually 93.7, the Fan, which everybody knows is the Pitt flagship.

In the old days, KDKA-AM did indeed carry PSU football, but that was a long time ago. That was back when only one game a week was on television, in the afternoon on ABC. ND had their reruns on Sunday AM, as did Grambling.

IIRC John Sanders was the sports guy and was a pro PSU guy as was the station it was WTAE and Bill Hilgrove that was the Pitt station.
I grew up in Somerset, PA and loved to watch the WTAE ch. 4 after PSU beat Pitt, the 48-14 game and the 15-13 1977 game were especially fun. LOL.

Fran Fisher: (in 1969) "And we wanted—Penn State wanted—KDKA’s 50,000 watts in Pittsburgh’s back yard."

That quote was from Prato's interview with Fran Fisher before he died.

I think KDKA-TV also was carrier of the Weekly Penn State Football Story for many years. I always thought there was some tie in with KDKA with production of the show since KDKA's Sanders and later Guy Junker were the voices of the show.

I hope you weren't serious about Penn State hockey. There is no way they are going to want something that may get 100 listeners. College hockey is an afterthought for people.

Live sports on the radio is simply not as popular as it use to be. With almost every game on tv there not much need to listen to the game. Sports talk radio is far more popular then the actual games.

Penn State lost a ton of radio stations about 10-15 years ago when some genius administrator decided that they would force stations to carry Penn State basketball in order to get football. Many stations found it was not worth eating the money they lost on basketball to continue to carry football.

Does anyone even listen to KDKA anymore?

Sorry there, blion. Like you, I do wish Penn State were still on the "Big K". But as others have noted and I think I may have on your original post, the end of that from what I've heard is that Penn State insisted on the station carrying BB also. Can't blame KDKA in that regard. PSU BB didn't help with ratings, to say the least. Until such time as Pitt moves away from KDKA FM, this probably won't happen again anytime soon.
