What is the deal with him basically always being open or open like 80 plus percent of the time?

I'm not a coach so what do I know but I watched some of that Chiefs/Texans game and it is absurd. Whenever they need a clutch 3rd and 7 or whatever the whole free world knows Mahomes is doing one of two things...1) throwing to Kelce who basically runs 10 yards downfield and stands there wide open in a zone defense or 2) he just escapes containment and runs for 10-15 yards. I mean c'mon how long can they do this? Kelce just runs down the field and turns around, boom he's open. Wtf? What am I missing?

Add to this that God forbid you breathe on Mahomes and he draws a roughing the passer penalty. Brutal. Can the Bills actually beat them??

If there is a God, the Bills will beat them on Sunday. In the last two seasons, they have devolved into one of the most annoying and irritating teams, and it's even worse this season because they are so beatable, yet they've only lost twice and one of the losses was in a meaningless game. I'm sure that based on their metrics, they should've lost probably upwards of five games this season. Unfortunately, I suspect that they'll probably find a way to beat the Bills in some excrutiatingly close fashion.

Yes they are annoying. Mahomes, Kelce, etc. They have become the Patriots the 2000s and 2010s but at least this year not as dominant. They are certainly beatable but somehow never lose. For the love of God please have the Bills beat them.

If they beat the Bills, which they probably will, I'll be the biggest Eagles or Redskins fan in the Super Bowl that is not an Eagles or Redskins fan

Not only is Mahomes protected like a newborn baby, he baits penalties, flops like a banked sunfish and works officials endlessly for flags. He's insanely talented but as a QB who utilizes his legs so much, there has to be some expectation of contact. If you look at him crooked it's 15. It's getting old. The overexposure is tiresome too. Every commercial. I guess you have to give him credit, he knows how to work.

Rememer that they beat the Bengals in the AFC Championship Game two seasons ago because a Bengals player barely touched him as he ran out of bounds and got a 15 yard penalty so that the Chiefs could kick a last second game winning field goal.

Aikman was saying this on Saturday. He runs all around and then ducks down quickly and suddenly and any slight nudge as he ducks draws a flag.

Welp. Maybe eventually defenses figure out that they're going to flag me either way...might as well blast the dude.
I still don't understand how Kelce is open so often. The play where Mahomes is falling down throws it and Kelce just standing there open in the end zone. Like some kind of invisible shield keeps defenders 3 yards away from him. It's not like Kelce is his total security blanket or anything.

Well, on that play, the Texans linebacker who was in coverage had a chance to make that play and failed, but I get what you're saying. Kelce really didn't have a good regular season, but came on a little at the end. My guess is that he's about done and was saving his body for one more playoff run. I wouldn't be surprised if he retires after this season.

Getting back to the original question - how does Kelce get so wide open so often?
There is some scheme they run or whatever that is way above my football X and O IQ to figure out. All I know is if I am the opposing DC I would tell the defense that I don't care if Taylor Swift beats you but do NOT let Kelce get open and beat you.

Gotta hand it to him and his agent for getting the endorsement deals while he is hot. I think he has State Farm and P&G (Head and Shoulders) plus others probably. Big companies that will shell out cash to market their brands.

Not a Chiefs fan but they probably will because that’s what champions do. Heard two things on the radio the other day. First, it has been almost 3 years since they lost a playoff game. Second, the three AFC Pro Bowl QBs, Burrow, Allen and Jackson (all great players for sure) combined had five 4th quarter comebacks this season while Mahomes had seven himself.

Kelce destroys Zone defense. Always has. Kind of similar to the Ravens with Likely and Andrews...teams try to play zone against them because they're tough 1v1 matchups but if one person in a zone bites on play action then they're wide open. The TD to Kelce was the LB completely gambling on Kelce going to his left leaving a huge gap. I think it was Azeez...great run stopper...not great in zone coverage.

Side note…a friends dad called my buddie and said the chiefs/ravens game was the real Super Bowl. But said the ravens beating buffalo by 25 showed they are the team to beat. Turned out he watched the regular season game against the two teams on the NFL network

When Kelce is open he is WIDE open but he is a diva receiver and does not run routes all the time. There were at least 4 drop backs where he just half asses his route or stood there once he got to the spot. I think he sort of lulls teams to sleep like that and is very good at setting up the routes when he does actually run them.

I do think Kelce goes at like 70% in the regular season but I don't see him as the diva WR. I think a lot of that is by design to keep him fresh and, as you said, open things up later.

I've seen videos with him being mic-ed up in game. He is like a clairvoyant diagnosing coverages and making slight arrangements to his routes. I mean, like moving a step over at the LOS before the snap.

100%--he's also elite and baiting defenders to follow him to a slot and then sliding to space--he's one of the best I've ever seen against zone coverage.
