Broke his hip in New Orleans on New Years Eve during the day. Needed surgery and died of complications shortly after midnight Friday night,

His father was in hospital after breaking his hip on New Years Eve and needing surgery. Father died shortly after midnight Saturday morning.

What a tragedy. I’m sure he’s in the age bracket of many board members on here. Be careful out there.

I don't know if Kirby knew things were going badly or not on Thursday as these things can change quickly. I didn't think Kirby coached one of his better games Thursday. I'm guessing this may have been weighing on him.
 
Sonny Smart had a storied run as a high school coach in both north and south GA. Our paths crossed in the mid-90’s in Rabun County as I was beginning my coaching career and he was winding down. He was a terrific mentor and I’m grateful for his guidance. He has an impressive coaching tree and he was a world-class story teller. We are losing some great “old head” coaches.

Not just coaches. The number of baseball Hall of Famers we have lost the last several years is dispiriting.
