You do understand that Kiss Me Deadly is a parody of the film noir genre, right? Robert Aldrich, the director was contracted to make the movie, so he didn't have any choice--even though he hated the Mike Hammer character (Aldrich was quite the left winger). He and the screenwriter A.I. Bezzerides turned Hammer into a sadistic cretin. Kiss Me Deadly is a great film but it has the same relationship to film noir that Dr. Strangelove has to the war film (and a similar ending).
I could never figure out if Ralph Meeker was in in the joke.
