Kuhn Certified!

Someone brought this up on a different thread and I really didn't see any discussion on it, so since this is a Kuhn thread, I figured I would bring it up again. It seemed to made sense to me. Here goes:

Does it make any sense to wrestle Kuhn in the next four duals? He'll face Lizak, Suriano, NaTo and Spencer - I don't think anyone here has any belief he has any realistic chance of winning one of those matches (maybe an outside chance against Lizak).

Does it make more sense to wrestle him in open tournaments during those duals (a la Nick Nevills two years ago)? This would give the coaches an opportunity to better assess his strengths and weaknesses prior to the tournaments separate from the grinder the next four duals will present whoever goes for PSU at 125. If they went this route I would bring him back for the Buffalo dual.

Thoughts?

What did English do his last year?

Yeah, have Kuhn do that.

English his final year had to fill in for a injured wrestler
at big tens.
He qualifed for nationals and if remember right he made AA.
At big ten I meant his dad and other Penn States fans at hotel ..Enjoyed talking with them all...On sunday checking out told his dad now he can make AA.

English also upset a returning NCAA champ (Maple) in OT in the 7th place match on his run.

Jammenz missed that 7th place match because he was busy at the t-shirt shop placing his order for having “MINNESOTA - NCAA CHAMPS” tees.

Here is a list of all the open tournaments remaining, that I could find:

January 27th-Appalachian Open (Appalachian State) @ Boone, North Carolina

February 3rd-Edinboro Open (Arizona State, Eastern Michigan, Edinboro, Navy) @ Edinboro, Pennsylvania

February 18th-Western National Open (Cal Poly) @ Colorado Springs, Colorado

February 25th- National Collegiate Open @ Dover, Delaware

Edinboro is the highest probability of him attending to get additional matches, however it is the same day as Ohio State.

Do want him to go into Big-10s with a 1 - 4 record. Is the goal to get him to qualify for NCAAs? Wrestling four of the top five/six wrestlers and the kid from Buffalo is not going to help that situation.

Kyle Akins from Buffalo is ranked in the coaches poll. A win would get Carson a little RPI boost. I would like to see him go to Appalachia State this weekend and then wrestle against OSU. Partly because he might save a point or two against OSU and that could be huge but mostly because Boone NC is a 2 hour drive and that campus is in such a gorgeous location...I would definitely try to get there to watch Carson and hopefully a few redshirts. I am guessing though.... that my happiness is not a major concern as Coach makes his decision

I'm going to add a few other tourneys that are close to PSU to the list you provided. There are other options, but they involve quite a commute.

January 27th-Appalachian Open (Appalachian State) @ Boone, North Carolina

Feb 3 - Messiah Open, @ Mechanicsburg, PA

February 3rd-Edinboro Open (Arizona State, Eastern Michigan, Edinboro, Navy) @ Edinboro, Pennsylvania

Feb. 11 - East Stroudsburg Warriors Winter Open, @ East Stroudsburg, PA

Feb. 17 - Mat Town Open II, @ Lock Haven, PA

February 18th-Western National Open (Cal Poly) @ Colorado Springs, Colorado

February 25th- National Collegiate Open @ Dover, Delaware

If my memory is any good, I believe he was also about 6-seconds away from defeating tshirt, who went onto become a national champion. But gave up a reversal for the loss.
Kuhn will be fine.

RPI boost? Way too late for that.

Ways to earn bid for conference
Top 33 RPI gotta have 17 matches vs D1
Top 33 coaches poll gotta have 5 matches 1 in last 30 days
Winning % 70 gotta have 8 matches vs D1

Underlined section is not correct.

Wrestler must have 5 matches to be in the Coaches Ranking, at least 1 in the past 30 days.

So....getting in 5 matches before the Big 10 conference and hopefully beating a 125 lber. that is ranked in the top 33 in the coaches poll might get it done? That seems doable and would be just fine with me.

Ohhh.....Purely hypothetically speaking.....If a rival school had a really good...highly ranked 125 and he had only wrestled say....3 matches this year. If said coach allowed him to wrestle only one more match....would the Big 10 then lose a conference bid.....lessening the chance that their rival would qualify their 125? Asking for a rival that does not rhyme with "Duckeye" " Now where is my tanning spray" "What do you mean the voice translator is on"? "Turn the D@mn thing O...."

Better beat more than one of them. All 5 ranked, 1-4 record won't get him ranked. 3-2 vs. that slate might do it, 4-1 definitely would, but which 2-3 conference guys is he beating?

If he skips the conference duals for opens + Akins, he could ring up a good W-L that the coaches' pollsters would find empty and ignore, unless some teams actually send (good) starters -- such as Sparky sending Millhof to Edinboro -- would have to be multiple good opponents.

I would lean more towards two opens + OSU +Buffalo. If he is indeed able to hit a couple of solid wrestlers and defeat Akins he has a chance. There is no doubt that he has to win a few matches at BIGs. Three wins will definitely get him in. Two wins is very much bubble time and might very well come down to how many 125 allocations the BIG 10 gets. I am hoping he is wrestling the best of his career. That should get him somewhere between 18 and 30 based on what little wrestling he has shown while healthy. Trying to be optimistic. I really think he has a chance to score more than 2 points at NCAA's......if he gets in.

While I think he's better than several conference 125s, actually placing ahead of them will be a challenge. He will get a really bad seed -- right now looks like 11-14 range -- which means he will need to beat Mattin or Welch to finish top 8.

I expect B10 to get 9+ qualifiers, which means seeding the entire field with 1 and 2 getting byes (and the 7-10 and 8-9 losers getting consi byes). Here are the placement scenarios:
- Win first 2 matches --> clinch 6th, qualified
- Go 2-1 in first 3 matches (W-L-W or L-W-W) --> clinch 8th, qualified
- Go 1-2 in first 3 matches (W-L-L or L-W-L) --> enter 4-man mini tourney for 9th/10th
- Start 0-2 --> out.

If he qualifies for nationals, he'll most likely be unseeded and subject to the random draw. Best case scenario would be a pigtail vs. another unseeded wrestler -- somebody's gotta get that, may as well be us.

BTW, if I had to start him in only 1 conference dual, it's the Goofers. Lizak might be a national finalist, but right now he projects as the 8th seed or lower at B10s, probably needs to beat 2 out of Suriano, Lee, and Rivera in order to reach the 7th seed.

Lizak needs to give up cutting to 125 and knock Pletcher down a peg @ 133.

No, that won't get it done. Getting into the Coaches Ranking top-33 by wrestling 5 matches earns a wrestler nothing...even if he's 5-0 (hypothetical, of course, as we know what Carson will be up against unless he goes the open tournament route), isn't worth a thing without the next step up, matches-wise. Next step is 8 matches, with a win % around .700. He needs BOTH to even have a shot at Silver Standard and earning an allocation slot for the conference.

In my view, without even seeing the young man on the mat yet, but being the optimistic soul that I am...best case is he steals an NCAA spot at the conference tourney.

Agree his only shot to make Ncaa is to earn it at Big 10 tourney

For the posters that weren't around or didn't follow during the 13-14 season, asking for Kuhn to repeat what English did has a little more back story and similarities than what is being discussed here.

English was in his sixth year, having been granted a medical hardship, because he was injured quite a bit during his previous years. With limited action and a body riddled with injury, he asked for one last chance, and won a wrestle-off with Andrew Alton in the last week of the season. Cael had serious reservations about him even coming back for a sixth year, let alone wrestling the post-season.

He pulled a hamstring at B1G, but qualified, and didn't wrestle live during the two weeks between B1G and Nationals. So, when his heart and guts took over from his body, he fought to a 7th place finish. As mentioned earlier, he lost a close second round match to Tsirtsis, then battled through consies, beating Barber, Lubeck and Niebert (SV 6-4) to preserve the AA. He lost to Habat, but decided he wanted to go out on a winning note, and took Kendric Maple to TB, where he escaped and then rode Maple in the second for the 2-1 win.

Cael carried him off the mat, where they met up with David Taylor in the tunnel, where the picture below was taken.

Kuhn is 13-8, has been injured for most of his career, had the opportunity to wrestle taken from him when BSU ended their program, and is asking for one last shot.

Also, we won the team title that year by 5.5 points and English scored 6.5 points. Without his points we almost certainly finish 2nd to Minny.

That's putting it mildly. English had a neck injury, and Cael advised him to retire before the season. English didn't listen. And he missed much of the year with injury.

In that sense at least, Kuhn is in a better position right now.

Also, that pic should have about another 20 likes by now.

Great pic. I remember a similar scene when DT won, someone called out to DT, DT acknowledged but kept moving, but did a doubletake when he realized it was Troy Letters (who had moved on from PSU by then), and then shared an emotional hug with Letters..........I remember an emotional hug between Cenzo and Cody last year as well as Cenzo and the team guy with the man bun (sorry, don't know his name). Lots of blood, sweat, and tears go into those moments of a lifetime.

Mike Schroeder, Strength and Conditioning Coach...and I will add, very good at what he does, same as all the behind-the-scenes folks. Shout-out to them all!!
