Kyle McCloskey will transfer to PSU for hoops

I’m wondering when he is eligible?
I think he will have to sit out the fall semester at PSU next year- that is assuming that he is no longer registered at Villanova. He will sit out the 2018 spring and fall semesters and should be able to play once the 2019 spring semester begins next January.

If he doesn't get a waiver from Villanova, he will be eligible once the fall semester ends, so he could suit up for a couple of late December, early January, games that occur before the semester starts (i.e. a mid-year transfer last year could have played in the George Mason, Binghamton, and Rider games this week). If he does get a waiver, he will be eligible at the start of next season.

What kind of player and is he a walk on?

Can't imagine why Nova would not grant a waiver.

Was first team all State as a Sr in hoops, averaged 20 pts per game as a Sr, 1000 pt career scorer, was also offered a PWO by Jay Wright at Nova. If I recall, and I may be wrong, but he was more of a small forward in HS. Very good athlete, not sure he can make much of an impact at 6'4-6'5" in the BIG.

Why would he need a waiver? He’s coming from a different sport at a different level.

Because the rule is that a waiver is required for any athlete who transfers regardless of sport or level. There are one-time transfer exceptions, but they don't apply to football (unless one is going down in class) or basketball.

FWIW, McCloskey was listed at 6'3" 220 on the VU football roster. My son is a freshman at 'Nova this year so I took in several of their football games this past season. The team was hit with a ridiculous number injuries at key positions, and after nearly knocking off Temple, they lost starting QB Bednarczyk for the year and everything kind of imploded. McCloskey actually started at least one game, but a redshirt freshman got the lion's share of the replacement snaps. In any case, both backups struggled terribly in part because VU also lost its best WR and TE to injuries, among others (FCS schools are limited to 63 full scholies, so it isn't plug-and-play like FBS).
