He's scheduled to wrestle in Russia this weekend and it was announced that he's on the World Cup roster to compete in Tehran next month. How can he manage to be a full time student at tOSU?? He's gotta be pushing the limits of the NCAA rules, right? He's basically a senior level wrestler traveling all over the world to compete while his sport is in season. I can't imagine that this is all on his own dime.

I suppose he can make it back to this side of the globe in time for the PSU/tOSU dual against Nevills.

I don't know what the rules are. Frankly other than an Olympic medalist, I hope we don't see this as the norm going forward.

I guess what I'm saying is if you're in college and have already proven you can medal (especially gold) at the biggest stage, I'm fine having him wrestle during college when it's convenient for him since he's a big plus for the sport.

Now if this were someone that made the Olympic team, didn't place and is still in college, I'd be deadest against what Snyder does.

I think Snyder and Cox earned an exception but shouldn't be the rule

Pretty sure it's not on his dime. Travel expenses are allowed to be paid by certain entities, though I believe it must be approved. Prize money would be a no-no.

IIRC he took 13 credits last spring and that was kosher.

He presumably could include online classes as part of that course load ... download the lecture, watch it on the plane or in the hotel room. SOP for business travel to work on the plane and in the room.

IDK, his path seems less onerous than the stories of pre-med Jim Martin carrying more books than gear to nationals because he had 3 exams the next week.

And he is at tOSU. Is he one of their many wrestlers with the same major? What was it, the one that's named "Sports Is Fun!" or something? :)

Doesn't the prize money go into an escrow account? Or was that just for the Olympics?
Not much in the rulebook, though awards/prizes that exceed expenses will generally end a student-athlete's amateur status. Awards administered by the USOC, for Olympic performance, called Operation Gold Grant are allowed, but no reference of escrow.

Don't put it by OSU....They would give him anything....

I'm hesitant to make fun of that. Can't remember the exact title but it was oriented toward athletics administration. Potential for abuse to be sure, but our sport should be encouraging its alumni to become ADs. It would be a lot better than leaving the sport's fate to the Trev Alberts of the world.

what a great problem to have for tOSU ... great press for the sport, and his backup gets mat-time while he's traveling the world

Hard to understand why anyone would have a problem with it.

On one hand he's not wrestling for his college much if at all. Hes healthy and Wrestling elsewhere. He will show up when it matters and try to earn his way into NCAA by placing properly at big ten. For some reason there are some that have a problem with this.

On another hand and in another thread this is ok. A wrestler is injured and making his way back. He doesn't wrestle much for his college if at all. He will show up when it matters and try to earn his way into NCAA by placing properly at Big Ten. And in one similar case a wrestler hasnt even been wrestling. But he too will show up when it matters and....

I see no difference between Snyder, Nevills/Cassar and Youtsey.

I'll say this though. I wish I could be Snyder and have that opportunity. And I can't wait to see him wrestle again.

True. The one thing though...what if he gets injured in International competition?

Maybe the same end result, but those aren't even remotely the same situation.

I also don't understand why fans would have a problem with it -- other than disappointment at not getting to see him live when anOSU comes to their arena without him.

And while I'm entirely OK with what Snyder is doing, I'm not an AD and don't sell tickets. He has marketing power -- it's not every day an Olympic champ in any sport competes in your town -- and so every college match he skips is a lost opportunity to draw fans, maybe add some new ones, and add some revenue to a non-revenue sport.

I saw that his major is Sport Industry. I guess he just has a world class "internship" that many wrestlers can only aspire to have.

Then he gets injured.

My son was barred by his Coaches from skiing. A common practice. His concern was if he got injured skiing he couldn't wrestle.

I replied it is our family activity. If he gets hurt wrestling he can't ski.

Coach agreed and we skied.

What if Snyder gets hurt in College Competion?

Good thought Jefe. We've seen this kind of disappearance in soccer. The impact can certainly be quantified, but it probably isn't terribly material. That's an interesting question. If I'm the AD though.....his opportunity exceeds my interests and he goes with good wishes.

For me, it's not a question of IF I get injured when I ski, it's a question of HOW BAD I'm getting injured when I ski. It's basically an automatic, my ski skills are atrocious.

I wonder how much the AD even knows or cares. Wrestling is one of over 30 sports at tOSU, and 2nd or 3rd tier WAY below football and basketball. Revenue is dwarfed by football...
