Las Vegas planning on bidding for NCAA wrestling championships

No surprise. If asked, I would have said Las Vegas would bid on more than just "half a dozen" sports for the next cycle (2023-2026).

Interesting to me that many of the cities that bid for 2015-18 were doing so publicly, meaning there were lots of articles in papers around the country, then the NCAA announced finalists, and ultimately the four accepted bids. The 2019-22 process was far more quiet. News articles were far harder to find, and the average fans really didn't know who was bidding. We'll see how the next cycle goes...we already have one player we know -- from the article NoVa posted.

For historical perspective...
-- 2001 was the last time NCAA's were held on a college campus
-- Since and including 2004, St. Louis has held the championship 7 times
-- St. Louis again is the host in 2021
-- The bid requests in 2015-18 were sport specific, and while other sports were on this cycle, many were not
-- The bid requests system changed dramatically for 2019-2022, with almost all D1, D2, and D3 championship sites bid at the same time. Some sports have other contract requirements, such as Football, and Men's Basketball, so they're not included. This was a massive change, but one that benefitted the NCAA, as they did it all at once, and overall it saved time and energy.
-- For the next cycle, 2023-2026, host bids opened on August 26, 2019, and will close on February 3, 2020. This will be for 86 championships across all three divisions. Announcement of successful bidders (host cities) will be made on or about October 23, 2020. For wrestling, it's possible the finalists will be announced between these dates, we'll see.

This may be a good place to ask the question...

What would be your perfect host city, given ALL factors?

For me, I consider...
-- Ease of getting to/from (if flying for example, are there easy, direct flights for me)
-- Previous experiences (St. Louis, NYC, Pittsburgh, Philly, as examples)
-- First-time host that would help grow the sport
-- Convenience for all fan bases
-- Size of arena/stadium
-- Distance from Iowa City (more is better)………..J/K

Vegas is a good start.

Dallas/Houston

Good/better weather is another factor for many sun-starved wrasslin fans from the Cael Belt

“From” served the same purpose in context, so Roar did go there, and he went there in ill humor (to paraphrase a line from HOF hockey coach Fred Shero)
Ha..irritability or bad temper...even anger. Thou dost not know me very well. pa-wrestler-now-back-in-pennsylvania on the other hand :):). Most annoyed I've been in years was waiting for an Uber ride in Pittsburgh, but it kept me from two of my four favorite things -- my wrestling friends (including pa), and food!!! The other of two of course, are watching college wrestling and my wife -- not necessarily in that order.

Yes! Been saying this for years: if the sport is serious about growth, it needs to at least occasionally hold its spotlight event in places that people want to go anyway.

Vegas fits the bill, plus no risk of ice or snow.

Plus who doesn't want to see Elvis reffing matches?

Vegas is a no-brainer ... I would book in a nanosecond.

Too bad the topless pools aren’t open in late March.

Good thing Cenzo would be graduated. He would never make weight for NCAAs with all the Italian and surf & turf buffets along the Strip.

i have a feeling that if the NCAA's are in a location such as Vegas the ticket prices will be crazy high again because it will draw the celebrity crowd not just wrestling fans.

The celebrity crowd? Not sure who you mean but I doubt it VERY much. It might draw wrestling fans who don't normally go to NCAAs because of the attraction of Vegas, but I doubt that affects the cost of tickets much. Price of tickets has been going up steadily the last 10 years. Philly basic tickets were $150, Minny they are $295, so almost double in 9 years.

some sections were selling per seat for over 1000.00 in Pittsburgh.

Why? How does that accomplish growing the sport? Not trolling, just seriously trying to understand the mechanism by which this would cause growth.

You mean Billy Baldwin might bring his brothers? The number of celebrity wrestling fans can be counted without taking off one's shoes. (Baldwin, Mark Ruffalo, Ashton Kutcher, Neil DeGrasse Tyson... umm, need some help here)

You just watch, Kim and Kanye will be there... LOL

Beibs got more coin than most of us. guess i will chill by the pool and keep the wives entertained.

So what? You really think the demand in Vegas will be the same as it was in Pittsburgh? What do you base that on, Justin Beiber wanting tickets? ROTFLMAO

I think there are thousands of fans out here in the west that would go to vegas but not travel east to watch. The draw for a championship out west will drive prices high with all the first time fans.

Come west young wrestling men!!
