Last Chance WTT qualifier - Friday, May 3 (Nick Nevills)

As was the case at the Open, 65kg is the strongest weight class here, with Bryce Meredith, Dean Heil, Evan Henderson, Joey McKenna registered.

I don't see anyone in Hall's bracket who should pose a problem. Nick's bracket doesn't look imposing either.

I’m so stoked to see Marky do Free again, it’s been a loong time, and he’s very, very good at it. Made my weekend, which is starting a couple of hours early now to boot!

Yet another mad squid prediction off the rails too.

So how do all these work? What is the difference between Last Chance WTT qualifier May 3rd in East Stroudsburg and WTT May 19th in NC? If I understand correctly the winners on the 19 go to final X. Is Last Chance for people who didn't compete or place at the Open? I really do not understand the whole process.

The winners today qualify to participate in the 19th with those already qualified. That includes the placers from the US open and others.

The winner of the tourney today gets the last slot (usually lowest seed) at the WTT on may 19. Last chance to qualify, if you didn't meet any of the other qualifying criterea.

Hall does have Brucki again, don't expect a similar result to his freshman year, though....

Thanks all! So basically this is for wrestlers that did not qualify another way, such as placing at the Open. Is there another way to qualify, like past champs, past team members, or such?

Yes, reigning NCAA champs qualify, which is why we haven't seen Zahid yet. Also returning team members--but they now typically compete in the open to get to final X (assuming they didn't medal, and are already there). Also U23 medalists qualify (Hidlay). Maybe I'm forgetting others.

Only 30 minutes away for me and Mark Hall in freestyle might make it worth it to skip out of work a bit early.

I’m really excited to see Hall back competing in freestyle. 1x Cadet World Champ and 2x Junior World Champ. Domestically, we are loaded at 79kg: Dake’s the reigning world champ, and I think the 3 guys behind him can all bring home a medal on the world stage. This is great for USA Wrestling.

I assume Valencia gets the 1 seed at the trials (assuming he’ll be there), since he swept Dieringer at last year’s WTT. So that leaves Dieringer with the 2 and Hall with the 3. Looking forward to watching a Hall/Dieringer match. I will not be surprised to see Hall vs. Dake at Final X. I’m very high on Hall’s freestyle skill set.

Not sure Hall will get the 3, with no recent freestyle credentials. He’s almost certainly one of the top 3 but it may not play that way. Really Crazy to think about our depth at 74 & 86 next year.

Didn't he win Pan Am's last year? Not great competition but it is something.

Aside from Dieringer and Valencia, what have the other qualifiers accomplished on the freestyle circuit in 2018 and the first few months of this year? There must be a seeding committee for WTT, unless the last chance qualifier winner is automatically awarded the lowest seed or something. I think Hall will tech or dismantle the field of McFadden, Jackson, Rogers, and Marsteller, etc. IMO, it’d be silly to match up Hall against either Dieringer or Valencia before the semis...but what I think has 0 weight on seeding :(

35 second tech fall. 5 quick turns (4 trap arm turns) after his opponent shot in on Hall. Onto the next round.

Hall done with Viruet in :36, via a head pinch, trapped arm tilt x4.

EDIT, okay, lol, I'll sit out pbp today, too many cooks in the kitchen.
No, you gotta stick around. Those other guys were wrong. It was 36 seconds, like you said, not 35, like they said.

Did the ref just come the table on that one and say "I put up points while you guys were getting potato chips"? LOL

He said something like that. I caught the first part; not the potato chip part. But that would be pretty funny (in a sad sort of way).

Long delay in the Whitford-Meredith match. I think the score keepers went out for more Pringles

Hall with the 10-0 Tech in about 1:40 of the first period.
