Well, assuming that's accurate, it sure does fit squarely atop the narrative he left behind at Penn State. Don't want to sublimate your ego and swim with similar-sized goldfish, you're not going to get as big as the other goldfish. He should just go to MMA already, though I imagine there are plenty of D1 coaches who will put up with whatever nonsense to put a possible finalist on their roster.

What's even funnier about this: Tomasello still lives in Columbus and trains at ORTC.

(At least that's what his twitter and his sponsor Rudis both say, plus he's not listed on the NJRTC resident athlete roster.).

Which means Father/Son Cruiseliner threw a sh** fit over someone visiting.

They should skip MMA and go straight to Real Housewives of New Jersey.

It’s a shame that Nick didn’t win as a freshman here. He could have then aimed for 4 individual titles at 4 Different schools.
Instead it'll now be something like
  • Penn State - Injured
  • Rutgers - 2nd pl. NCAAs
  • Paramus Fight Club - 2nd pl. (possibly 1st, pending outcome of ongoing litigation)
  • Grand View - 1st pl. NAIAs

The only question in retrospect is how either side thought it was a good fit. Someone wasn't being honest with himself (and the other party by association). Some of it is on Cael for not recognizing Suriano was not a good fit.

can't find the rutgers forum thread that themat.com alludes to...
There was the thread a while back titled "Farewell Suriano" that detailed the dust up between Old Man Suriano and the RTC coaches. It was right before the Pellicone. Many Rutgers fans writing him off in the thread, but now it looks like it was vaporized. Hope springs eternal.

Hope Suriano is aware the allure of professional MMA is more than actual pay. Just ask Cejudo.

Easy to say after the fact. Everything is just peachy until adversity, or obstacles hit. Not everyone deals well. Just look around, not just in the wrestling world.

It's water over the dam to me, but I wouldn't add my comment without a little perspective.

That's why I said "in retrospect". But I also can't believe everything was just peachy until the injury from what I saw of the interactions before that. I also can't believe there weren't a lot of other warning signs prior to the injury. The kid's personality didn't suddenly change. No one is perfect and it was a bit of a whiff on Cael's part, imo.

It's easy to see why this arrangement looked perfect during recruitment.

We are the premier wrestling program in the nation, Suriano likes that.

Suriano was going to be a 4 year contender w/o a redshirt (and Nico was graduating), we liked that.

We could deal with feelings throughout the years.

What part of it should Cael have recognized while recruiting him?

The part about how Suriano would react to an injury? The guy had never been injured before.

About how he would fit with his teammates? He remained friends with them after his departure. Their congratulations in the tunnel after he beat Fix were much more than matter-of-fact.

About how he would get homesick? Cael had managed lots of guys thru that, and Frank Molinaro is every bit as Jersey as Suriano.

About how Suriano has a big ego? What alpha male D1 competitor doesn't have a big ego?

Thank you. I searched hard and couldn't find squat.

Also, this "Don't bring anybody in at my weight" stuff could be a downfall of RTC's. I understand that it's different at this level, and it is their livelihood. However, every wrestling room from the time you're a child to the end has depth charts, wrestle-offs, and training partners.

But also also, if that means RTC's stop stocking 4 65kg athletes and bring in Greco guys I'm SO in.

pretty much agree … although I was told that the dad was an issue (and I think he is the root of the problem much more so than Nick) well before NS got injured at OKST.
