I'll be the first to admit that I was way too quick to worry about Mason last year when he was seemingly in a funk. I overlooked the fact that he had jumped from style to style and training center to training center. Now that Mason seems settled with Wyoming Sem. and Folkstyle I'm willing to say this is the best iteration of Mason Manville we've ever seen. His offense is evolving at an incredible rate, he gets to legs more often than ever, and he still has maybe the best head-hands of any HS wrestler in the country. The display he put on in the Ironman finals against a really funky guy in Wick was nothing short of dominant. Really excited for Mason to wrestle in a PSU singlet in the future. I think we may be setting up to see one hell of a replacement for Zain down the line.

It may be a tall order for Manville to wrestle at 149 in college, unless you assume he isn't going to grow any, which is probably unrealistic. If Manville can't make 149, 157 and 165 are already kind of crowded with Joseph, Nolf, Hammond, and Rasheed, and Law and Beitz in reserve. Unless maybe Joseph can go at 149, but Retherford still has 2 more years after this season.

Mason very well may grey shirt and then RS which makes up for the two years. There's a lot of people who have said they don't think Mason will grow too much. He made 66 kilos not all that long ago.

Great post, I think Mason might not get the pub he deserves because of some Hall guy.

Manville initially reminded of the Dardanes brothers--all-out strength, limited offensive creativity. Being the strongest at your weight class in HS will get you pretty far so it's been nice to see him open up a bit the last two tournaments. Seems like a real good kid in interviews too, look forward to seeing how he'll fit into an increasingly stacked PSU lineup.

^^ Link to Mason's Ironman finals bout. He sure looked good - fourth times a charm!

I know this is a Manville thread, but I can't help myself: scroll to 2:10:00 and check out the misdirection ankle pick Carr hit on Verkleeren with a little under a minute left in the 2nd.. Straight out of the Ed Ruth playbook. World Champ Verk totally bit on the fake. Just insane for a HS soph.

Carr is gonna be a super stud 5 time champ, would love him at PSU but would be shocked if he gets out of Ohio. And he may be the same weight as Joe Lee (though I imagine he'll be 160 or 170)

No way Joseph makes 149, hell he didn't make 157 for NLO and had to scratch.

Blair and Wyoming in prep HS wrestling is like saying I went to Harvard and Princeton for academics. One thing that was a constant with Blair...those boys are taught to ride! This match was such a..well, mismatch it wasn't funny! Manville crushed this kid worse than the score indicated.

Nobody thinks a Cyclone 3 time NCAA champion would want his son to wrestle for 4 time, undefeated NCAA champion and fellow Cyclone Cael Sanderson?
I would be more surprised if the kid goes anyplace other than Penn State.

You mean like the Jordan's picking Ohio State instead of that option or Piccinini choosing the Cowboys instead?

Joseph did NOT make 157 for the Penn State Open, forget about 149, people don't get smaller at that age, he will probably be at 165, maybe 157, forget about 149 or he will have the same problems with the cut Marstellar has (Marsteller will be a lot better at 165 or 174 than he is at 157) next year murderers row for Penn State Suriano at 125 Cortez at 133, Gullibon at 141, Retherford at 149, Nolf at 157 (Manville redshirt), Joseph at 165, Hall at 174 if he wants to wrestle his true Freshmen year), Nickal at 184, Cassar at 197, Nevills at 285, my GUESS (no inside information) for next years lineup.

or Joseph at 157 and Nolf at 165.

Bo'so father wrestled at Wisconsin and I have no idea where Piccininni's father wrestled (or even if he did). So no my post was not comparing David Carr's future college selection to anything either of those two did.

I simply suggested one Iowa State royal may want his offspring to wrestle for another Iowa State royal.

I have no idea what point you were attempting to make, but I am certain you felt you had one.

Not quite the same as Chance. A lot of people feel Mason is done growing and Chace never really cut in HS. A lot of wrestler's chance's size could make '57 and not be gassed the way he's been

The only way he leaves Ohio is to go to Ames and that's because of the family history
You mean like David Taylor or Max Thomusseit or Dean Heil or Anthony Collica or Domenic Abounader or Austin Assad or Nick Brascetta or Ty Walz not getting out of Ohio? Or like Alex Marinelli not getting out of Ohio after committing to Ohio State?

Or you mean like Mark Hall not getting out of Minnesota after moving there?

It's way early to proclaim him a lock for Ohio State or any other school.

This is the first I'm reading that Vincenzo Joseph missed weight at 157 at the NLO. Granted as I was out of the country, but I'm surprised to read this now.

Not doubting tjb & taketop above, but I'm wondering if those or others in the know could elaborate / confirm / provide a link?

You must have been out of the country, lol, as it was posted a number of times here and on TOS by more than one poster who attended the tournament. Unlikely to ever hear any official word on it I would guess.

Ha, got it. Thanks Dice.

That should certainly make for some juicy offseason lineup discussions next summer.

I saw it in a bunch of places that day too, nothing official though. Mention was made, though, that some of the sources were other wrestlers talking about it on the floor, which lent the rumor some validity, for me at least.

No dog in the fight (the kid is not going to my alma mater). However, just out of curiosity, what is current state of the relationship between Sanderson and Iowa State?

I seem to recall that Douglas felt a little pushed out when Cael took the job, and then the ISU administration was not happy when he left for PA.

If the major draw is that both Carr and Sanderson are ISU legends, a damaged relationship between the latter and the school could potentially be a factor.
