LIVE FROM PEGULA… it’s Sunday afternoon!!!!

Odd game so far. 7:26 left in the 2nd and Penn State only has 15 shots on goal.

Still 2-0 end of second period. Lackluster period and we are still serving the last 2 minutes of a 5 minute major to start the third. Definitely some rust to shake off. Shots are 20-12 but limited good opportunities.

It’s been 589 days since our last home game with fans! Home opener vs. LonG Island. LETS GO STATE!!!!
2-1 now after our defenseman pushes Autio into the net with the puck. Yikes. too much drama for a game like this.

Mercifully we get a break away goal with a minute left to hang on for the 3-1 win. it was not pretty but a W is a W.
In hockey a W is definitely is a W. Pairwise formula doesn’t care about style points, just W’s and L’s and the W’s and L’s of your opponents.

Nice to start the season with a W! Hopefully No. 2 comes tomorrow (and they figure out Copeland's eligibility). How was the crowd?
Fairly empty (maybe 1/3 capacity). Students filled their bottom bowl and were loud. But they too were rusty with some of their chants. Seniors are going to have to step up and teach the first and second years how it’s done.

I thought three freshmen really stood out. Ryan Kirwan scored the first goal and assisted on the second. Daniyal Dzhaniyev was all over the ice and had several good looks (and assisted on the first two goals). The scoring will come. And Simon Mack was steady all game on the blue line (had one assist). A couple others didn’t stand out as much (Carson Dyck and Ben Schoen) to me but still played solid games.

Agreed Kirwan and DD were the ones that caught my eye. We’re not rebuilding we’re reloading. Not expecting a B10 championship this year but a lot of entertaining games and the foundations are being laid for the future. An NCAA birth would be nice since I think this is the last year the regionals are in Allentown.

Minn and Mich loaded this year, but honestly 3rd is wide open IMO. Plus Guy’s teams have always shown ability to play well in B1G tournament. Getting to a regional would be nice. B1G teams really do seem to cycle where they drop off and then work way back up and repeat.

PSU up 5-2 halfway through the third in Game 2. Sounds like a lot of penalties on both squads. Sarlo scored his first of the season and put PSU up 3-1 on a nifty breakaway coming out of the penalty box.

UPDATE: And PSU gets the sweep, winning 5-2 tonight. Nice to have both football and hockey undefeated, at least for a week if not more. 😁

I’ll look more closely tomorrow, but through two games I think the freshmen and sophomores have scored most of the goals and assists. And there’s a couple of kids currently committed who I think are better than anyone on the roster at their positions. Hopefully they stay committed to PSU and don’t go to the OHL like several previous high end commits did.
