Icers looking for a first ever sweep of the Gooooophers. Updates to follow.

Not a good start ... Down 2-0 15 minutes in including giving up a short handed goal. Ugh.

Down 3-0 now mid way through the second. Really lackluster effort today.

complete melt down today 5-0 with 9 minutes left. No further updates appear necessary. Will post if a miracle occurs but looks bleak. Freshmen may have hit a mid season wall.

appears only one team was live today ;).

Have to say that Minny came out and looked fresh. The other team appeared to be very lethargic -- I did not recognize that team. I did not see McAdam dress, so he may have been injured. Skoff wasn't perfect, but the giveaways and shorthanded opportunities took a toll on him and the scoreboard. Nice crowd Friday, and then more on Saturday.

Gophers were very good today, very disciplined. Passing was crisp, and they created a lot of good shots. Hudson Fasching was a beast (No. 24), and his speed, control and stickhandling were a clinic for young players. When STPGopher fan shows up, in either thread, welcome and good game by your boys. They were ready to play and dominated PSU in all phases.

Minny had 3 short-handed goals today...to be clear, they were the team with one less player.
I always thought the squad at full strength was supposed to score.

Odd man rushes were/ are a trademark of the Gopher program as a whole. Lots of times, it is just a lazy pass, or the defender makes a nice break on the puck and pushes it up the ice.

For some reason this team (Gophers) is developing a trend of playing flat to just plain terrible on Fridays, and playing motivated on Saturdays. Not sure why. They have had a few seasons in the past where that has been the overall trend.

With that said, it doesn't think the Gophers have arrived or PSU is 7-1 bad. We got beat soundly by Michigan (8-3) on a Friday, and won 3 to 2 on Saturday. What I think we are seeing is both teams are still in search of consistency and tweaking lines/ styles of play. Right now I won't be surprised to see PSU, and Michigan fighting till the last series for the conferences regular season crown. I think my Gophers will be in it as well, but I've seen enough this season to know that the team could also play up and down like a yo-yo.

Would like to know if PSU is playing packed in around the net this season, or more of a fluid style this season? Sometimes a trapping style works better on a smaller(NHL) sized sheet of ice. I am assuming that is what Pegula has.

Anyway, nice series. Looks like we meet again in early February.

Wishing you a good season!

Cheers!

The one thing PSU clearly needs to work on is their power play. Not only did it generate very few scoring opportunities, but it led to three short handed goals (one of which was an empty netter). So instead of scoring and building some momentum, the goals at the other end deflated them.

I was at both games and was amazed at how different both teams looked less than 24 hours apart.

Tweakable? Many times it's just working on making the opponent spread out via passing. Passing (poor)may have also been what created the short handed goals. Without seeing the game, I'm guessing opportunities were created via breaks on poor passes...

Regarding the affect the goals had, I could see that. Especially since the Hockey team is really just getting going. Still learning to win/ dominate. The PSU team is still amazing considering this was a CLUB team just a few years ago.
