At the dinner table last night the topic of the Berkey Creamery came up. Everyone loves the ice cream, cheese, yogurt, coffee, breakfast sandwiches. The only drawback are the long lines during football weekends, arts fest, graduation. I was joking with my nephew about enrolling at Penn State when he’s older solely so he could design faster lines. My brother replied that the lines are accepted by design for marketing. Subliminally people will see the long lines for the delicious ice cream and don’t want to miss out. What say you?

I go to Meyers when the line is long. What’s your bro think of that?

On the flip side, they're losing potential sales to people who may want ice cream but don't want it so badly they'd be willing to stand in line for 45 minutes. On a normal day I doubt the wait is even close to that. It's unlikely they'd add another two or three registers for the ten days per year when the lines are long. Besides, the employees can only scoop ice cream at a given rate. Having a dozen people scoop would be chaos behind the counter.

This. Only so much room for registers, moving around behind counter, scooping ice cream, etc. plus like you said, can only scoop so fast.

All good things are worth waiting for!
You know you can order on-line and have it shipped to you. We do this several times a year just to get our "fix".

The way I beat long lines for hand-scooped cones is to go to the freezer for a pre-packed pint. Same ice cream, and faster trip to a regrister.

Same marketing scheme as the Soup Nazi. The insults and customer anxiety were also part of the experience.

Nobody goes to the Creamery anymore. It’s too crowded.

For me its the exact opposite. I won't wait.

Lines help when it comes to the creamery. It isnt an exceptional product and people love waiting in lines.

Works well for them.

Kiosks our side could help. Also order and pickup service would help. Problem may be getting staff.

If they want to increase sales, they should spot several refrigerated trucks in the RV lots, near the Bryce Jordan Center and at strategis positions on campus. Also should sell ice cream cones in same areas. How much would it cost to develop trucks or spot vendors in these areas. I usually drive by the creamery on Friday when I arrive at State College and get ice cream at that time. Much shorter lines. They are losing sales each football weekend.

There are lines outside the creamery. But they are losing sales. .

Ok. Got it.

They used to have one at the Jordan Center, because that's where I used to go for mine. But I've only been to one or two home games in the last 5-6 years. There's at least one kiosk in the stadium too, as I got some at the Kent State game last season.

I waited in line for an an hour on Tuesday at Treehouse Brewing in MA. It was a great investment of time. They only sell at the brewery. While in line you get a small order sheet with what's available today and in what quantities. I lucked out and could buy one can on King Julius (best beer in the US). And my wife got another.
We were in line with a PSU grad from NH who had driven 2.5 hours one way to buy Treehouse.
The point is that some products are unique and have a reputation that people will sacrifice time (and usually a lot of money) to consume.
Not sure if Thorstein Veblem (sp???) who coined the concept of conspicuous consumption applies here.
Yes, I was an Econ Major.

Not always true. I went for half gallons Sunday after the Purdue game and was told I'd have to stand in line with the cone line. I left.

Odd. Usually it's completely separate--as it is two different kinds of assembly (given the dry ice packing).

The system they have for serving people is really strange and likely contributes to the game day lines. They must have had the game day parking consultants involved.

they do sell it in the bjc, on football weekends (and during all bjc events). Pegula also. Should probably set up a truck though on porter. A couple 5 figure feasibility studies are needed first though.
