FB Recruiting Looking at the past decade of Penn State Football Recruiting Classes

It is always funny to look at past recruiting classes. Per the list, the second worst was actually Franklin's best by a wide margin. His second class has matched or exceeded the impact of his highest rated class. His third class which wasn't highly rated provided more impact than all but one class following. What is the common dominator? All three classes were dominated by O'Brien's pipeline. Once it was gone, we largely haven't been the same.

This is interesting. This tells me PSU has underperformed in the BIG based on the recruiting rankings.

How can PSU have a top 2 recruiting class (within the BIG) 50% of the time and yet lose nearly 80% of the games to OSU and Michigan under coach Franklin?

There are only 2 possible answers. Either the rankings are bogus and PSU players performed worse than their ratings or coach Franklin has not done a good enough job developing and coaching the talent he recruited.

Which is it?

Who finished #1 every time? That's part of your answer.

hard to argue that it's development given the players we've put in the NFL.

Nope. Does not add up. Michigan definitely did not have consistent BIG #1 rated recruiting classes over the past 10 years and neither did MSU. Yet, PSU has losing records against both programs over the past 10 years. Why?

Right. tOSU has been head and shoulders above all the B1G teams until very recently. Plus, look at recruiting at the most important position, QB. We’ve had scrappy game managers while tOSU has had Heisman candidates.

Sanctions?

yeah, another delusion. one of many.
Try proven fact. We have had a drop off in impact player a marked drop off of majority of positions and have major holes in the roster. Franklin is a good recruiter, but he and his staff are not great and quite frankly are below average in some key areas. We don't do a good job of identifying talent at many positions which forced the team to over-commit offers with little reward leaving holes elsewhere. We flat out whiff at every quality 3 technique we have offered. The pipeline of targets OB left drove the 16 to 19 era. The biggest 2022 is the biggest achievement Franklin's talent has had and we played the easiest schedule we have in the Big Ten era. Nothing controversial.

Coaching in the difference between a 10 and 12 win regular seasons. The right staff could have beat Ohio State this year with the talent we have and kept us in the game with Michigan. With that said, recruiting rankings are generally bogus.

The sanctions had almost zero impact on any Franklin coached team. Poor coaching explains just about every problem we have faced during his tenure.
I was replying to Blair who asked about our performance over the past 10 years. You don't think sanctions affected the team? Really?

I have a collection of Town and Gown's Football Annual magazines. These are great reading.

Enter talk to Day since he’s been #1 and lost to UM twice in a row.
