Me and Mrs. are looking for a 4 day getaway.. We love hiking. Usually we do Acadia or Great smoky mountains but we're looking for something closer. We're in franklin county Pa. We looked at the Blue Ridge in Va but the prices are stupid high. Any ideas or tips? Thanks....

Have you ever been up to the Allegheny National forest? Lots of great hiking. North Country Trail is the major trail, but lots of others. Could check out Kinzu Bridge state park, Allegheny Reservoir. Allegany State Park in NY is well within reach as well. Very inexpensive area…not a lot of flash either…but if you want to hike and enjoy the outdoors it’s a great spot.

Bennezette in the heart of Pa elk country. Trout streams, great views, lots of elk! Beautiful mountains, rivers, streams, state parks. Sizerville Park near Emporium. Check out Cherry Springs State Park with the darkest skies in the east. They have telescopes set up to view planets, stars, galaxies and globular clusters. Really cool.

McAfee Knob (Blue Ridge mountain range) near Roanoke, VA has some iconic views at it's peak. Also Mill Mountain Star in Roanoke. Some nice breweries near by for afterwards.

Check out Damascus/Abington, VA. Virginia Creeper bike trail, AT, and other outdoor opportunities with good dining and some local breweries.

I second those above suggesting Northcentral PA. Especially if you're planning on a fall trip. You could probably stay in a different town every night and get to see a lot of real estate.

I'll add in the Finger Lakes region. Not too far from Northcentral PA to do a couple days of each or even a day trip from Potter or Tioga Counties if you want to stay in one spot.

Backwaters fall state park in Wv. And if you want to go scuba diving go on down to mount storm!! I m serious

Was just going add the Finger Lakes, especially Ithaca and Cornell U. There are something like 25 water falls within 20 miles.. The lake is gorgeous and there are some great dining/entertainment in town.

The apple harvest festival in Ithaca is nice as well. Especially if you like wine. There's a pile of local wineries that all come to you instead of driving to each one. Ithaca Brewing is nice as well.

Being a mountain biker.. we're going to try Banner Elk and Boone NC.. Supposed to be a weekend getaway, it's going to be a weekend of downhill/enduro...

While you are down there mtn biking in NC you should check out Tsali Recreation Area. Great single track mtn biking there.

We got to Boone tonight and it was packed. No clue coastal was in town.

My wife and I like North Central PA. When I was younger I had backpacked the Black Forest and Susquehannock Forest trails. The rail trail along Little Pine Creek is a great place for bike riding. We like camping at Pine Creek State Park and taking day trip for hiking and biking in the area.

Boone, NC area.
We also like Banner Elk, NC

YES! Wife and I took the kids out there for a week for Thomas the train at the tweetsie railroad. AMAZING area. West Jefferson is a cool little town with a nice little wine shop on the main strip. Few good breweries too. The grandfather mountain winery is nice. Live music Thursday-Sunday if I remember correctly. Plus they have a great seating area. Banner elk winery has good wines but their seating area isn’t nearly as nice as grandfather mountain. We stayed in a cabin in fleetwood, which was super nice. Close enough but far enough.

LOVE Boone!

Boone on TV right now!! See ESPN2

Wellsboro...PA Grand Canyon...Cannot beat it
Kinda the other side of the coin...Loyalsock. Worlds End SP, Eagles Mere area. Nice old town, hiking, big water, rugged country off the beaten path. Either watershed would be worth it, Pine or the Sock.

Ricketts Glenn is one of the best hikes I've ever done as far as beauty in Pa. Great trails with a bunch of waterfalls. Should be enchanted about now

Just spent a long weekend hiking in the Catskills - some nice trails near Woodstock and New Paltz. Beautiful rocky outcrops, though as I recently posted, the foliage was still pretty green. If you’re going to do any trails at Minnewaska State Park, get up early - the lots with access to all of the good trailheads fill up quickly. I typically have hiked Vermont in the fall, but tried something new this year.

Surprised no on mentioned Happy Valley yet. Tons of MTB and Hiking Trails in Rothrock and also in Bald Eagle. Could always pop into town for a meal and drinks then head back to the woods. Should be lots of availability on non-Football weekends and during the week. Leaves just started turning.

Having had a home there all my life, I still love Worlds End State Park and the Loyalsock/High Knob area of north central PA. Plenty of great hiking trails with beautiful views and leaves changing colors. Another vote for Ricketts Glen as its not far from there and the waterfalls are stunning to hike.
