Looks like 23&me may go out of business.

I can't wait to see who they sell the genetic database to.
good point. If you gave up your DNA to 23&me, anyone who buys them would own the rights.

So all the murderers in their family tree can eventually get caught.
you joke but....

I know a good dr who isn't signed up for donor status on his driver's license. As he explained to me, Drs are analytical. If you are in an accident with a threatening head wound, they look at you and think "I can save four or five people with this heart, lungs, liver, and kidneys". He told me that ten years ago and I laughed at it then I lived through COVID and watched the Netflix movie "Painkiller". I don't laugh so much anymore.

Look up the DJ Freez case in Lancaster. He murdered a school teacher and they caught him 25 years later through a relative’s genetic genealogy.

I have never signed up for donor status on my drivers license nor has my wife

Beyond these law suits I've read that their business model is not good and isn't sustainable. People buy the service once and they're done. Only a certain segment of the population are interested in testing, so they found it difficult to grow the business.

I post this because this has been a topic on this board. They had a data breach and now are having to pay substantial penalties to settle lawsuits. They are cutting 40% of their workforce and need cash. Nobody is ponying up so they may be forced to go out of biz.

They are going out of business because the thought their data would be able to be used for medicine and they blew a ton of money on that idea.

This is a fairly good case study on business plans which make no sense.

We adopted a dog earlier this year and are wondering what her genetics are (was advertised by the shelter as a "mixed breed" but we think she has Jack Russell terrier and possibly Whippet or Greyhound in her - she's wonderful but she's very active and she can be a handful at times). I have no problem giving her genetic information to something like Wisdom Panel. I would never give my (or any family member) genetic info to something like 23 and me.

Sometimes I wonder if "they" don't have it anyway, say, from blood drawn for yearly blood tests.

I'm not supposed to say anything but ... they've already cloned you ... in fact, you're a clone. Obviously, they haven't perfected the process. Mistakes were made. All the "originals" are cryogenically frozen in Area 51.

I read somewhere that someone sent the same dog's DNA to one of these companies multiple times under a different account to test their service, and got different answers every time. I think it's all BS but if you want to spend your money on it, go for it.

Thanks - that thought had crossed my mind as well.
