Manny Bowen will spend his final year at Utah.

Typically I would wish someone well, but I hope he never sees the field.

For those wondering why.. his tweets during the Michigan game. He is a punk and I'm glad he's not with the team.

It sounds like Franklin had enough of either Bowen's behavior or academic committment but didn't want to suspend him and risk his life going further south.

Too bad. Having Bowen this year might have made a difference in the OSU & MSU losses. Hopefully Bowen gets his act together in areas other than just football.

Following kids on twitter... that's going to make you crazy.

Must have deleted the Michigan stuff. Only some stuff supporting Brandon Bell and re-tweets from Cabinda and Tyrann Mathieu. And this, which was tweeted the same day as the Michigan game:

Here is his big announcement:

Actually, its probably the most sensible thing he's done in a while..... IMO.

He had two options:

1) Use his final Year of Eligibility at PSU..... trying to juggle: A - Graduating, B - Working his way back onto the depth chart C- Trying to put together enough of a season to impress NFL folks enough to get a look..... all in the space of a couple months.

Or

2) Spend the year at PSU focused solely on finishing up his academic work (and, probably, working on getting "bigger/stronger/faster")...then go to a quality program where he can fit right into the top of the depth chart from Day 1 - - - - get a spring/summer under his belt with far fewer additional commitments on his time..... and spend a full season on "Football" (while just taking the minimum load of "2nd Degree/Grad Level" courses to be eligible.)

Sounds - to me - like the kid made on of his most well reasoned decisions ever.

I guess. He graduates in December so seems like that wasn't a big obstacle/issue. I can't imagine it would take too long for him to get back into a regular rotation on D - given he would be getting ready for the NFL, I can't imagine CJF would make him sit for half the season. I don't know what his particular issues were, but some stuff I've seen from other players on social media have me wondering why they're not sitting. Will leave it at that.

Hope for the best for the kid but at least we can all admit this wasn't about "education", right? Bowen was doing what was best for him in terms of football. Nothing wrong with that but it wasn't about the education.

Forcing college football players who aspire to play in the NFL to 'play school' with majors that have little to do with their career path makes as much sense as forcing a future doctor to participate in athletics to get his degree.

tl;dr - None of this is about education.

Thanks. I was curious and just looked up whatever he was talking about. You found what I found and it was from half hour before kickoff. Curious to know what those deleted tweets were.

I wish he hadn't been a knucklehead..... I think he coulda' had a real nice career here, AND helped the team win a few more games. When it was "rumored" - back in the summer - that he might be back, I figured that could be a HUGE boost for PSU.

That said, once he was in the pickle he was in (for whatever reasons) I think he probably made the right decisions in the end (for him... obviously not necessarily for PSU :()
FWIW, Utah - which is a really solid program - is also losing all their LBs (they play more or less a 4-2-5.... but lose both of their box LBs and their Hero/SS guy. I would guess Bowen would slot in there as a starting Box LB from day 1)
We do lose our starters, both will be playing on Sundays. Our back ups are excellent as well, but we typically rotate 4-5 guys at LB. He will fill an immediate need for depth, we are taking 2-3 more freshmen this year, but it usually takes them a year to learn the system and build up the strength...

The laughing tweet is from 617pm and game kicked off at 330.

Good riddance

interesting. Somehow, seems it's pegged to West Coast time on my device. I'm on East Coast time and it shows the tweet as 3:17 or thereabouts. If he sent it after the game (or anywhere close) as your screen shows, that explains all the harshness. Hard not to be pissed. Just like the OL who skipped to the NFL early with Deion Barnes and his nasty tweet about why he left early...

Thanks

You're getting a good one. Shame how it worked out here.

It would be nice if the NFL had the equivalent of the NBA's G league. It would be a financial loser but the NFL should be able to subsidize it.

The NCAA could help by tying scholarships to graduation rates. Graduating only 70% of your players might mean you only get to offer 80 scholarships. But I have unusual opinions. I think college sports should be played by college STUDENTS.
